TASTE OF BETHESDA

2011 INSIDER'S GUIDE

Everything You Need to Know!

Another www.RobertDyer.net Exclusive!!!

The now-famous Taste of Bethesda is this Saturday, October 1, 2011!!!

Prepare to sample delicious foods from the restaurant capital of the world, Bethesda, Maryland.

First time attending? Not to worry, it's very simple. The event runs from 11 AM to 4 PM. Park in any of the nearby public garages along Woodmont Avenue and the Woodmont Triangle, and walk or take the free Bethesda Circulator to the blocked-off area - you can't miss it!

At the ticket booth, you pay $5 and receive 4 tickets. Each food item you exchange tickets for at any restaurant's tent will cost 1 to 4 tickets - an appetizer will obviously be less than a steak, for example. There's no limit to the number of tickets you can buy.

In between meals, burn off calories by walking across Wisconsin Avenue to the Chevy Chase Cars dealership, where the Back to Bethesda car show is always fascinating for muscle car buffs. (Like me!) Or, head down to Battery Lane to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad's Rescue Day, that will entertain kids of all ages. Did I mention that a real helicopter will land at the squad?

Ladies, you haven't been forgotten - Taste of Bethesda just happens to coincide with Bethesda Row Boutique Week, which starts this Friday! Visit the boutiques of Bethesda Row for big savings, trunk shows, and bonus gifts with purchases.

BETHESDA ROW
FOUNTAIN
GRAND REOPENING

After a long renovation and transformation, the fountain in front of Barnes and Noble at Bethesda Row will officially open again this Saturday, October 1!

From 1-3 PM, you will be able to get FREE Haagen-Dazs ice cream by the fountain!!

I never understood the timing of this renovation. All summer, when the weather was ideal, the fountain was closed. An ugly, wooden Berlin Wall was constructed around the site, and space to hang out or listen to the many musicians who play impromptu concerts there was limited. It gave a bad impression to visitors during the biggest travel time, and disappointed longtime residents. It uglified what is widely considered one of the most attractive urban spaces in the country.

Perhaps one day this logic will be explained.

But the future is here this Saturday, and we can only go forward. During the Taste of Bethesda, you can take the Bethesda Circulator down Woodmont Ave to the fountain. Enjoy your free ice cream, and give your feedback about Bethesda Row fountain 2.0. Then take the Circulator back over to the Woodmont Triangle for more food from the best restaurants in the Washington, DC area!

Stay tuned for my Taste of Bethesda preview - all you need to know for the big event this Saturday!

ROCKVILLE FREEWAY
UPDATE

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett held a town meeting last night at Westland MS in Bethesda. I attended and brought up the issue of the Rockville Freeway, as a long overdue (it's been on the books for over 50 years!) highway project that will relieve traffic congestion along the 355 corridor.

Surprisingly, Mr. Leggett said that he agreed that this road is necessary. This is quite a refreshing change from the county council's position, summed up best by Councilmember George Leventhal's remark last October: "The Rockville Freeway is dead."

The long-delayed 6 lane, divided highway is quite alive, however. Mr. Leggett noted that the freeway would provide "connectivity" between growing job and residential centers within and without of the county.

While Mr. Leggett concurred that such a road would have benefits, he was highly skeptical it could be built. "I don't share your optimism" about federal and state funding, he said, noting the dire state of transportation funds at both levels.

Mr. Leggett is the second county executive to acknowledge the value of the Rockville Freeway project; the first, Sid Kramer -alas- happened to also be part of the group of local and state officials who stopped it from being built! But as he did so, Mr. Kramer conceded that the freeway would have indeed reduced traffic congestion.

So I think it is a good sign and step forward that Mr. Leggett is at least open to the concept, and is not just dismissing the possibility. As I've noted previously, the White Flint sector cannot grow to the size projected in its oversize master plan without the Rockville Freeway being built first.

The freeway would connect the Montrose Parkway with the Intercounty Connector near Indian Spring Country Club.

I am more optimistic than Mr. Leggett about the funding, for a number of reasons, and would like to give that topic the time it deserves in a future blog entry.

Unfortunately, you probably won't see my question when the meeting is broadcast, because a large group of citizens opposed to the soccer fields in Potomac turned out, and dominated the night. The rules on time limits for speakers, and the clear instruction that the same topic was not to be brought up once it had been covered, were not enforced.

The result was that the topic of the Rockville Freeway, and others of interest to Bethesda and the entire county, will likely not be heard on Channel 6. Many of us came out in bad weather for a community discussion, only to find ourselves marginalized to an "after the 60 minute" segment. All because one group disrespected the rest of us by taking up the majority of an hour meant to cover a wide variety of topics. Worst of all, some went home without being able to speak at all. Again, it was not really convenient for busy people to attend, and I'm sure everyone could have been heard from if the rules had been enforced.

I do appreciate the fact that Mr. Leggett took some extra questions after the time limit, including mine, and overall it is at least good to hear that some elected officials recognize the tremendous need for the Rockville Freeway in light of the tremendous growth and automobile traffic in the future. We need to work to make the freeway a top priority, and to convince open-minded, responsible leaders that the funding can be achieved for this vital project.

JOE BIDEN

BRINGS STIMULUS

TO VAPIANO AT

BETHESDA ROW

Last evening, a Secret Service and Metropolitan Police motorcade entered downtown Bethesda and stopped at Vapiano at Bethesda Row.

It wasn't President Obama - it was Vice President Joe Biden and his wife stopping for dinner at the upscale pizza and pasta bar.

Of course there were plenty of Secret Service agents out and about. With many visits by the Obama family to Bethesda Row, this is starting to become routine. However, we are still waiting for the Commander-in-Chief himself to stop by some day. I think he'd like to try the DC Dog at Bold Bite, to find out if it really is better than the half-smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl. He also likes burgers, and there are plenty of those around downtown Bethesda, too. So, stop by soon, Mr. President!

BETHESDA CENTRAL
FARM MARKET
RANKS #10
IN THE NATION

Regular attendees have been voting all summer in hopes of having Bethesda Row's Bethesda Central Farm Market named the top farmers market in America.

Unfortunately, as with the ukulele Guinness World Record shocker a few weeks ago, Bethesda lost the top spot nationally, and locally, at the last minute.

It wasn't a thousand strumming Swedes who beat us this time, but the venerable Eastern Shore town of Chestertown. It was an impressive victory, especially when you consider how small their population is compared to the DC Metro area. And Chestertown isn't exactly roadside to Route 50, so it wasn't a tourist vote. Chestertown simply outworked us, and congratulations to them.

Congratulations to Frederick Farm Fresh Market, which was #3.

Bethesda still came out an impressive #10 out of every farm market nationwide. When you consider how many there are just in our area, 10th is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations to BCFM, and we'll have another chance at the brass ring next summer!

BETHESDA ROW
PUBLIC PARKING
GARAGE 57
TO
GET SMART IN
NOVEMBER

Tonight will be a typical evening at infamous Garage 57 between Elm Street and Bethesda Avenue: horns honking, rude people, and driving around and around and around.

Eventually, you find out it was all just a waste of time. That car on the top level that should have pulled out of its space just as you rounded the corner? Well, its driver and his date are just getting started on their calamari appetizer around the block. Yes, everyone else had the same plan as you.

In two months, this may change.

The county just announced that this November they will install electronic displays over the entrances to Garage 57. They will tell drivers, in real-time, the number of vacant parking spaces.

Let's hope the system is accurate, because I've encountered some that claimed vacant spots when the garage in question was actually full.

Now, the system won't give us more parking spaces. In fact, when JBG demolishes the surface lots at Woodmont and Bethesda, we'll have less parking than ever.

But it will save a lot of wasted time searching in Garage 57.
