Assault at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda


Montgomery County police responded to a report of a 2nd-degree assault at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda on January 26, 2026. The assault was reported at the mall at 3:15 PM Monday. This is the second assault reported at the mall this year, with the first having taken place on January 10. The mall is now on-pace for 24 assaults this year at this rate; 12 took place at the property in 2025.

    What constitutes a 2nd degree assault? It would be helpful in these reports to know that.

    Another prediction: this blog will soon feature bar graphs indicating "assaults so far this year," and "projected assaults." Just as with the "assault at the Giant" story, isn't January much too early to be making these projections?

  3. Well, things are certainly a lot different at the mall than in years past. And in related news, some totally insane person set off firecrackers inside the Food Court tonight. Firecrackers sound an awful lot like gun shots so if it's not July 4th, run, duck or hide is a common response. What a totally out of control situation is this? Beyond reckless, dangerous and scary.
