Call Your Mother Deli construction stalled out in Bethesda

The signs say "opening soon," but the interior says otherwise at the future Call Your Mother Deli at 4828 St. Elmo Avenue in Bethesda. Construction appears to have not even gotten underway yet in the space, which was vacated by Hardwood Artisans last summer. One of downtown Bethesda's most highly-anticipated openings, Call Your Mother will have to hurry to catch up with competitor PopUp Bagels, which is under construction over at 7607 Old Georgetown Road.

  4. Speaking of Call Your Mother, Bethesda Community Store now hasq a Silver & Sons BBQ trailer on their lot. There's was much discussion about that place. I tried it at the new Westbard and wasn't really impressed. It's not traditional BBQ which is what people want and expect. Pass.

It's Jewish, do your homework or do you just a) open mouth; b) insert whatever; like an Insink-erator?

On your next peeping tom excursion, go look in the window of the PopUp Bagels store. It's even less finished than Call Your Mother.

    1. 5:43: How can something with zero work done be more finished than PopUp Bagels? Worst case scenario they would be tied at zero. In reality, PopUp would then still technically be ahead because CYM still has to demolish the Hardwood Artisans interior.

I had high hopes for Silver too, but was really disappointed. Concept is good, execution / taste poor. But I hope other BBQ options come to Bethesda. Maybe Mission or ideally Rocklands.

I'd doubt any place with the money to set up around Bethesda is going to be worth it. Mission and Rocklands are okay, but my experience is the *real* good places around DC are the tiny, hole-in-the-wall, one-off joints, where the owner is the cook. PG has proved more satisfying, at least to my tastebuds, than the spots I've tried around the 2081- zip codes. As with all things gustatory, ymmv.

    3. 2Fifty Texas BBQ in Riverdale (and DC) is the best in the Maryland burbs.

But 10:08 said it's Jewish so somehow that gives it a pass.

  8. 6:11 - Robert, I had high hopes for a pop-up bagel but had recently learned it's not that good at all. And they require you to buy three bagels per order. The reviews and the chatter about them is not great at all

It's difficult to convert from retail to restaurant. It's been a long time since a restaurant was in that space so they probably have to start all over.

Hopefully the Bethesda location won't allow people wearing Hamas support pins and garments to work behind the counter.

I'm sure Elrich's permit police have got Call Your Mother by the Bagels and are twisting ! After 8 year of Rolly Polly in the K-Mart suit Business friendly as always. Could anyone have done a worse job ?
