The sign is up at PopUp Bagels at 7607 Old Georgetown Road, in the ground floor of the Solaire 7607 Old Georgetown apartment tower. A sneak peek inside shows that the interior fit-out of the restaurant is nearly completed. PopUp Bagels is in a race against time to open before local rival Call Your Mother deli can open its own downtown Bethesda outpost.

Signage installed at PopUp Bagels in Bethesda

Charleston, SC went crazy when their location opened. But I doubt that'll happen here. The location isn't great and mostly will rely on folks walking by. I don't love their model which, correct me if I'm wrong, requires a purchase of at least 3 bagels. Though they may be made fresh and all that, do most customers want 3 bagels? If you're alone and only want one, you're out of luck? Is it way better than Bethesda Bagel? Probably. But Call Your Mother is a worthy opponent in the best bagel in Bethesda race and parking is much easier to allow a quick dash in. Lastly and relatedly, the police better start enforcing the no standing rule on that section of Old Georgetown. Cars throw their flashers on all the time and it jacks traffic up. My guess is it'll get worse with Pop Up.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if this one closes before it opens.
ReplyDeletePre-opening snark and shade. Par for the course, in these comments.
ReplyDelete4:28- it's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteOpening dates are Aug. 3rd for CYM and Aug. 7th for PopUp Bagels
I'll go there once to get the "must buy 3" as per their business plan model, the ice cream type cup of whipped cream cheese & jalapeno on the way home on opening day unless they have bankers hours like Bethesda Bagel, in which case I'll just continue to get my trusty ET bagels at Lidl for .79¢
