I read an article once about how NYC lowered crime so dramatically in the 90s. They would watch for crime sprees in their infancy. For example if there were a rash of purse snatchings in the same neighborhood two nights in a row, come the third night they would have 30 plainsclothes officers lying in wait. I wonder if the Montgomery County Police Department has ever considered forming an offensive task force like that to deal with lesser crimes like vehicle break ins. It's night after night after night in the same general area so enough undercover officers and you'll catch the perpetrators the very first night your out there. Then on to the next area or crime type.
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me. It would be nice if the police took some initiative.
ReplyDeleteMontgomery County Police does have a plainclothes unit they have deployed in neighborhoods in the past. I don't know what the criteria is to deploy them, however.

ReplyDeleteThey do indeed do this. There was a rash of car break-ins 1-2 years ago in some neighborhood in 20816 and they set up a stakeout and caught the criminals within a night or two.
ReplyDeleteAlso the MCPD weekly crime report has for the last few months included a map to show each crime like this, so you can see visually if they may be related.
"They do indeed do this"
ReplyDeleteThat's better than saying "they do do", which makes folks snicker.
Just make Maryland a Constitutional Carry State. Maine is the latest, no blood on the streets there.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how being able to carry a gun will cause some drop in car break-ins. Do residents plan to camp out on their porch every night, shotgun at the ready, on the off chance someone tries to break into their car? Most car break-ins in Bethesda are into unlocked cars, so an easier way to combat this would be for residents to lock their cars.
