Matuba is coming back as...Matuba (Photos)

Those who were concerned about the previously-announced concept change at venerable Japanese restaurant and sushi bar Matuba need not worry. Owner Kunio Yasutake says he is back at the restaurant, and that Matuba will reopen very soon - simply as Matuba, not "Deli Matuba".

Perhaps to reassure fans of the restaurant passing by on the sidewalk, there is now a photo of Kunio in the window, located at 4918 Cordell Avenue in downtown Bethesda. And, as you can see in the photo below, a new liquor license has been applied for. All of this is good news for a restaurant that has been in Bethesda for 35 years, making it a veritable institution in the Woodmont Triangle.

Stay tuned.

So what exactly did Bethesdans learn from this article, that they could not have learned on their own by walking along Cordell Avenue?

Thank goodness someone came to their senses. Deli Matuba would not have worked. Nonetheless, a "reboot" is a mystery and a bit of a troubling sign long term. Successful restaurants may close temporarily for remodeling, etc but don't usually do what these folks are doing which makes me question what the deal is here.

In the last few years they've had much better business at lunchtime than in the late dinner hour. Seems like a "fast-casual" format would work better for the lunch and early dinner crowd.

MATUBA should just shut down and give it's money back to the shareholders...

It's owned by a single family. You sound confused.

Make it a fast-casual ramen place! I'd go there for that.

How did my comment suggesting folks not take it out on Matuba violate comment policy?

And how does noting that it was already known that the original owners had returned to Matuba, violate the comment policy?

It looks silly when you whine about the County's restrictions on comments at public meetings, when you delete every other comment on your blog.

Agreed. It hurts your leg to stand on when you do the same.

    2. 5:56: You asked what a person wouldn't know from walking past on Cordell. Then when I answered, you claimed that point was the only information in the story. Wrong. The change from Deli Matuba back to Matuba was not known "weeks ago." People were still busy ripping off my report that broke the story back then. Laughable to now try to claim credit. Don't go to bed before the King, and Stop trolling.

I wrote the comment about Matuba owners not paying for your sins. Not the walking by comment. I agree that was trolling.
