Bethesda Japanese restaurant and sushi bar Matuba is switching cuisines, and plans to reopen as Deli Matuba.
There were rumors yesterday that the restaurant was closing for good, but apparently, any closure will be for renovations related to the deli transition.
They are currently hiring front and back of the house staff. Matuba says the deli concept will open "soon." Stay tuned.
Glad I'm the first poster on this. You have got to be flippin kidding me. Deli Matuba? Their next door neighbor is already a deli or at least trying to be one. This falls right into what I've been posting here and that is our food scene is just a joke. Who in their right mind is going to say, "Hey honey, look, what we've always wanted, a Japanese Deli". The only good thing about this is this one and the one next to it are going to fail. Greenberg can't wait because if you throw in the old Leahey shop, you've got plenty of space for another building. No one is going to come into town that serves interesting, tasty food. This story just convinces me of that. Beyond ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteSo will this be a sushi carry-out place? Not sure what a Japanese deli is -- I never saw one while I was in Japan.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it will be like the Hinata on St. Elmo.
ReplyDelete"Greenberg can't wait because if you throw in the old Leahey shop, you've got plenty of space for another building."
Greenberg from time to time replaces old small buildings with very slightly larger ones on the same property, but I've never seen him combine properties to create a building with a larger footprint.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Conley, not Greenhill, owns the Leahey site.
Sometimes it's better to wait 2 hours and 3 minutes for a much more thorough report, one which actually explains the "deli" concept instead of leaving Bethesdans in suspenders.
ReplyDelete8:44AM is testing new ad taglines for his Bethesda blog:
ReplyDelete"When you want to be second or third to know"
"We'll report it...eventually"
"News aged like fine wine"
"We re-microwave Dyer's reporting. It's tastier."
Defamation! Dyer. Delete! Doh!
Delete8:44 and 8:51, I think there is room for those that are first and for those that are thorough. Doesn't have to be one or the other. Sometimes it is nice just to know the basics and sometimes it is nice to know some details.
ReplyDelete9:59 AM Yeah, 8:44am needs to relax. He seems to think he's in competition with Dyer or something. Counting the minutes and seconds...lol. Probably needs help.
ReplyDeleteIt goes like this: Dyer gets the scoop, then the other site reports on it later. They must have an easy job -- follow Dyer's site for tips, then write their own post about it an hour later.
ReplyDeleteThe funny part is Dyer is just a one-man shop and I'm guessing he just does this in his spare time. Meanwhile, the other site is a well-funded operation, with proper offices and huge ad revenues from their glossy magazine. My 2 year old can't even pick up their mag, as it's so heavy and full of ads. It's like 10 pages of ads for every 1 page of content.
Despite all that funding, they STILL can't seem to report on most of the latest news before Dyer.
Win one for the little guy!
10:35 AM It is sad. Bethesda Magazine steals Dyer's stuff exactly like you say and then hop on Dyer's site and post insults. Really bad/nasty people over there. I used to read the magazine, but can't support them now.
ReplyDelete10:35 relax.
ReplyDeleteThis theft stuff is idiotic.
ReplyDeleteBut yes. Bethesda Magazine is a magazine publication and does a good job of their monthly product.
Robert dyer is a man on the street blog and does a good job of his daily product.
They aren't exactly competitors. Why make it a competition?
Sure, Bethesda Beat is the newly acquired Bethesda Now, but they can coexist. Why the constant who scooped who? Just enjoy both blogs.
What's idiotic is the Bethesda Mag troll posting insults/weird comments all day here. Apparently they believe they are in competition with Dyer.
ReplyDeleteWrol, nice ad above! Should have included info on how to subscribe. Operators standing by!
You're kidding, right? Why do you think I work for Bethesda magazine if I mention it? I mention Washington post as well - do I work there? I've mentioned the Gazette - was I a former employee. We've all talked about Fortune 500 companies - do we all work there? This logic is not rational. Let it go.
Delete11:12 AM I assume you condemn the weird negative troll comments/insults? I haven't seen you weigh in on that.
ReplyDeleteYes there are idiots on both sides of the fence.
DeleteI agreeboth blogs have spots where they are unique, areas where the news is a bit stale, areas where the do a pretty decent job, and areas for improvement. Obviously we all read both given the conversation.
ReplyDeleteNobody is going to a magazine for up-to-date news.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's okay. We like many sources of need and entertainment. This constant yammering about who is better or first is what's idiotic.
Delete10:35 AM is telling the truth right there.
ReplyDeleteWrol, I've never seen you criticize or take on the troll that spews hate towards Dyer.
ReplyDeleteJust an observation.
You may want to engage him as a voice of reason.
Actually I often say the vampire and other stuff is idiotic as well. So...
DeleteCan you provide some rationalization on your opinion of Dyer as a voice of reason?
Steven Hull...Bethesda Magazine plagiarist in chief :)
ReplyDelete"My 2 year old can't even pick up their mag, as it's so heavy and full of ads. It's like 10 pages of ads for every 1 page of content."
ReplyDeleteDo you realize that it's hard to take you seriously when you include hyperbole such as this, and keep babbling nonsensically about "glossy magazine"?
They have a website, you know, and yes, it is mobile-friendly.
Yes, friendly for advertisers, not readers.
ReplyDeletePlease don't attack those of us who read Dyer. We're not interesting in reading your blog or your magazine. Good night.
10:55: We absolutely are competitors, as painful as that reality is for you, "Wrol".
ReplyDeleteIs it readership you are competing for? Readership is not a zero sum game here. Most people here read all the local Betheada blogs.
DeleteIs it advertising money you are competing for? There are no visible ads, so unless you're getting money on the sky then there's no competition there.
Why do you feel there is a competition and what are you competing for?
"Dyer"
Why would you being competitors be a "painful reality" for me? Not everyone has an axe to grind with someone who they feel might be slighting them or in competition somehow.
Delete5:02: Nice try. There is indeed a competition. That's why you find spammers regularly trying to post references and URLs to competing sites on the comments here.
DeleteCan you explain your rationale? "Nice try" isn't answering any questions or supporting any position.
DeleteMeanwhile Dyer's shill is whining about "stolen scoops" on the "glossy magazine".
ReplyDeleteDyer would delete a comment like that on his own blog.
5:22 Dude, no one cares about your magazine or little blog. You keep bringing it up. Your blog has little original content...mainly summarizing Post articles and duplicating Dyer's reports.
ReplyDeleteWe're here for Dyer's reporting, not debates over blogs.
"Wrol" would have more credibility if he'd also appear occasionally to condemn the bizarre troll attacks against Dyer.
ReplyDeleteActually as pointed out before I certainly do speak negatively of the vampire comments and trolling (real trolling, not just those with opposite or negative opinions of Dyer). All of the time actually. Idiotic. Both sides.
Delete6:11am Well, they are stealing. Get real. Dyer readers know it, you know it.
ReplyDeleteYou can't continue to use Dyer for info without crediting him. Full stop.
"Hey, we'll continue to steal from Dyer. If anyone calls us out, we'll threaten them." Great plan guys.
ReplyDeleteWhat "threats"? The comment is still up over there. They don't censor like they do here.
ReplyDeleteWhat comment over where?
ReplyDeleteYeah what comment over where?
DeleteOne minute. You're obsessed. LOL
ReplyDeleteAnyway, there's no point in linking to the comment since Dyer will promptly delete it.
6:50am yes, spare us the links.
ReplyDeleteHave good day sir.
I would like to see them.
DeleteYou actually made it to three minutes that time. LOL
ReplyDelete4:58 AM Get real. It's obvious Dyer's competitor's are trolling him daily and posting here. Makes them look pretty bad when you see the kind of stuff they're posting here.
ReplyDeleteObvious? Is there any proof behind that claim? Unless you have access to viewer data that other readers don't have, perhaps?
DeleteHow is it obvious the trolls are competing blogs? What evidence to support that theory?
ReplyDeleteDyer is closing out a week of exclusive reporting, scoops and analysis across the MoCo government, development, retail and restaurant beats.
ReplyDeleteI doubt he needs advice from the negative troll on how to run his news site.
Dyer had an in depth discussion of the Rock Spring development meeting. Same day, Bethesda Mag's most popular article was about dog shit.
ReplyDeleteThat about sums it up.
Why the constant need to compare two different products? Self worth issues?
ReplyDelete2:58: Two products, competing in the same market. Get over it.
DeleteIs readership a zero sum game? Not sure it is.
DeleteThe way you and your readers complain and diss the other sites sounds so childish.
9:38: I'm not the one who keeps bringing it up. You do. I'm allowed to respond, as are readers, when you come in here and attack my site.
ReplyDelete
