Maki Bar - "The best sushi restaurant in Bethesda" - opens Wednesday

Your lunch plans for tomorrow may have just changed.

Maki Bar, a new sushi restaurant in the Shops of Wisconsin at 6831 Wisconsin Avenue, opens Wednesday, November 18, at 11:00 AM. Their website is now up, including the menu, touting it as "the best sushi restaurant in Bethesda."

Is the sushi fresh? Maki Bar says they only use fresh product flown in from Japan. They've also got sake, of course, and a beer list with Sapporo, Kirin and Asahi.

To celebrate the opening, Maki Bar will be giving away free dessert to all dine-in customers on Wednesday.

It would be helpful if their website explained why they are the "best sushi restaurant in Bethesda." Is their wasabi freshly grated (and not the artificial green horseradish)? Does their sushi chef have some sort of pedigree (apprenticed at a noteworthy sushi restaurant perhaps)? Is their fish sourced from a high-end distributor? Right now, their menu reads like your typical generic sushi/maki restaurant with reasonable prices, so I'm left wondering how this place is any different from their competition.

So when is Dyer going to report that Marriott is buying Starwood? Surely that is good news for him - MoCo capturing another Fortune 500 company at last.

    1. 6:51: It's been well-covered by the international business media. You seem to be confused - Starwood isn't moving to MoCo, it's being absorbed by Marriott. It will not increase the pathetically low number of Fortune 500 companies in MoCo.

When will Dyer report that renovations to the tennis court in Battery Lane Park were completed a few days ago, and the nice new court is now open to the public?

    Thank you, MoCo Machine!

Because he would have to admit there was no conspiracy that deserved three posts and it was simply a tennis court resurfacing.

re: Anon @6:51 = because that does not fit The Moribund Dyer's meme of "the moribund MoCo economy" perhaps?

It's not a good sign when the item at the very top of the menu is "Soft Drinks".

@ 4:16 PM: So you think that a Montgomery County company growing into a much larger one, and moving up in the ranks of the Fortune 500, is a bad thing?

  8. 5:45: I'm delighted at the news. But clearing up the erroneous claim in the comments section that Starwood is moving its headquarters to Montgomery County, and continuing as a separate company.

Here is the original question from 6:51 AM today:

"So when is Dyer going to report that Marriott is buying Starwood? Surely that is good news for him - MoCo capturing another Fortune 500 company at last."

Dyer's reading comprehension sucks, as usual. And he thinks that MoCo will benefit only if corporate headquarters are poached from other states, but not if companies that are already here, continue to grow.

  10. 7:55: So would you rather have the Northrop Grumman, Volkswagen, Hilton Hotels, Corporate Executive Board and Intelsat headquarters, or acquire Starwood? No brainer question.

Al these headquarters are in the US? Sounds good to me.

re: Anon @1:37: I think that Starwood HQ is Stamford, CT. I'd assume some of those jobs will move to Bethesda, but long-term most will be eliminated (which in mergerville, that's what happens).

Quoth also The Moribund Dyer @4:18: "we're still moribund." Well...if your sole count of economic development in MoCo is the number of Fortune 500 company HQ jobs there are, they we are. I guess your are fine then with insulting all the thousands of other MoCo jobholders that exist in MoCo -- teachers, cops, firemen, waiters, dry cleaners, any and all manner of retail jobs, IT guys, plumbers, electricians, lawyers, doctors, etc. -- and contribute far more to the life of this great county, eh?

"I'd assume that...long-term most [of those corporate headquarters jobs] will be eliminated"

Which shows you how worthless they are in the first place.

I'm not sure you understand how mergers work.

The worthless jobs are the first ones to be eliminated during mergers.

So is Dyer actually going to review this place, or is he content to say "best sushi retaurant in Bethesda" before they even serve their first customer?
