The Crown Castle-owned former TV tower on River Road, now serving other telecommunication purposes, had no operating aircraft warning lights last night through dawn this morning. Located behind McDonald's in the industrial area, the tower is 850' tall.
Lisa Minney of Crown Castle tells me the company is aware of the problem, and is working to resolve the issue. She said a Notice to Airmen was issued regarding the dark tower.
Sounds dangerous! Glad to hear they contacted the authorities!
ReplyDeleteSounds really dangerous
ReplyDeleteWouldn't have been so funny if a plane had hit it and landed on your house, would it 6:58? Maybe next time. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDelete6:58 concurred it was dangerous. What's so funny?
DeleteThe sarcasm in 6:58's comment was felt across country.
ReplyDeleteReimer trying to add some nighttime excitement with a airline disaster. Might have made Bethesda interesting.
ReplyDeleteThis is a common occurrence across the country, which has tens of thousands of towers over 199 feet in height. A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is the standard operating procedure. They are required to be no lower than 1,000 feet over populated areas due to noise restrictions except when taking off or landing. Landing aircraft are still at 3,000 ft when they are over the American Legion Bridge. They are still at 1,700 feet over the Palisades neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteIf an aircraft is at 850 feet over River Road, they've got much bigger problems than worrying about hitting a tower.
Which I told you last year, when you complained about the lights malfunctioning on that tower. They'd be off course and about 2,000 ft too low, meaning they are likely to crash into a residential neighborhood, tower or not, unless maybe they can make like Scully and get to the river.
Huh? So is 11:33 saying that the lights are unnecessary? Aren't they required by faa rules to be on there?
ReplyDelete11:33 What about helos? Military, county and state craft traverse the area at lower altitudes not on the KDCA approach or climb out.
ReplyDelete3:41 Exactly.
ReplyDelete6:58 AM here......I was actually serious that it is a dangerous situation. I wasn't not trying to be sarcastic.
ReplyDeleteSo 7:18 was totally off base and uncalled for. Sarcasm meter adjustment ordered. :)
DeleteLooks like someone jumped to Dyer's defense unwarranted and without basis.
Deletere Anon @ 1138 AM -- I believe that 1133 AM commenter is referring to the altitudes that the planes need to be flying at, not the height of the tower.
