Suma Restaurant + Bar to open May 17 in Bethesda

Suma Restaurant + Bar will officially open May 17 in Bethesda. Named after the Old English term for "born during the summer," Suma will feature outdoor patio dining, as well as an open, airy feel to its interior.

The modern American menu is under the direction of Chef Gene Sohn and General Manager Jay Evans, former colleagues at Bethesda Row's nearby Mussel Bar.

Located at 4921 Bethesda Avenue, the restaurant also plans to feature live music, showcasing local artists.

  1. Nest always had trouble attracting an upscale progressive crowd. With a name like Suma, this new eatery looks to be atoning for past sins and starting off on the right foot. I will try them for lunch next week and report the results!

Since it will feature live music, does that mean it will be classified as a "night spot"? If so, this will mean one less net loss of night spots in Bethesda.

    Thank you, Hans Riemer!

Suma team is smart to court the likes of Poppy. I have no doubt that she and her friends can take down $19 foie gras appetizers and $30 scallop entrees for lunch on a regular basis. Better make sure you guys have a wine list she won't sniff at.

10:15 AM This is Bethesda....do prices matter?

    ReplyDelete
  10. The menu prices posted on that other website seem perfectly reasonable. They are consistently below Manhattan entree prices and pricing even common offerings like the cheeseburger around the $20 mark will help keep the clientele more progressive and respectful.

Imagine I am out with my girlfriends for a lovely meal of Goat Ragout and Sea Scallops and suddenly find a loud group of Metro maintenance employees seated next to us looking for $10 hamburgers on their lunch break, covered in grease and bellowing loudly about how much they love conservative ideas and candidates. That would be dreadful. The Suma menu looks to be priced to keep such unpleasantries from coming to pass.

    Feel the Bern, Poppy!

Girlfriends seems like an awfully sexist word for someone who most likely supports the idea of not needing to identify with either gender.

Will you tip a full 20% on the Tax for your Suma Bill? You can expect taxes to be ~100% of food cost if the Democrats ever have their socialist ways.

  13. @11:56 All of my girlfriends identify as people. If that were to ever change, I would change the name of their collective accordingly. I certainly hope that Suma would follow suit by letting them use the restroom of their choice.

  14. Correction to my 12:04 - I mean identify as Female, although they are people as well, of course.

Egads, I had a little too much Campari at lunch. I need to have the Au Pair drive me to equinox tonight!

Poppy your racist views have no place on Dyer's blog.

Also why would you suggest Bethesda and Manhattan are comparable? That is madness.

This is the most racist post on the blog since Dyer himself was babbling on about cinco de mayo.

    Get lost.

    1. 12:10: How exactly is reporting on Cinco de Mayo specials "racist", you moron. The County Council opposing every black candidate for U.S. Senate since 2006 - now that's racist.

And here, I thought Wesbard NIMBYs were all for keeping those auto body shops. Looks like they have nothing but contempt for people who earn a living with their hands.

I am sure Poppy respects those people who work with her hands, she just doesn't want to have lunch near them as they are spouting about how much they love Donald Trump.

I asked who lives in the backroom of an auto body shop? Someone claimed "Poppy" does.

This may be a huge benefit for Suma's opening. All of Robert's readers are going to show up daily for lunch hoping to catch a glimpse of Poppy.

To the Suma Team: I do hope you will deny her admittance if she shows up fresh from her Yoga class at equinox without showering or changing.

  30. 11:22: The KKK was started by Democrats. Hillary Clinton's self-described "mentor," Robert Byrd, ranked as Exalted Cyclops in the Klan, and made numerous vile racist remarks.

In contrast, Jackie Robinson was a Republican. So was Booker T. Washington. Here's a good quote:

"I am a Republican, a black, dyed in the wool Republican, and I never intend to belong to any other party than the party of freedom and progress."
    - Frederick Douglass

What was that about Republicans not being able to call Democratic politicans racist?

Robert, your description of the Democratic Party has not been especially accurate since the passage of the 1965 Civil Rights Act. Southern Democrats who had supported segregation began defecting to the Republican Party shortly thereafter.

The Party of Lincoln has suffered due to the influx of Southern conservatives. As for the late Robert Byrd, he repudiated the Klan many decades before his death.

Someone please tell Dyer the history of the Republican Party since 1964. LOL

  32. Anonymous3:50 AM

Hint: Start with Strom Thurmond and the "Dixiecrats". Then next, Nixon's "Southern Strategy". And Lee Atwater's comments on the campaign that he managed for George HW. Bush in 1988.

Poor Suma. All they want to do is sell $27 Halibut and and $11 cocktails to Somerset residents and their comment thread devolves into a debate about which party is more racist.

I wish you the best Suma.

You're confusing the modern Democrat and Republican parties with they're very ideologically different successors. You may or may not have realized the Solid South no longer exists, or it exists in that every state in the South that voted solidly Democrat now votes Republican in presidential elections at least half the time. Clearly their conservative/racist values aren't well represented in the Democratic party.

    1. 8:23: You're the one who's babbling. I'm debating the guy on his boilerplate "All Republicans are racist!" rhetoric. This isn't the Kojo Show where only people from one side of the argument get to speak. I can actually debate, which is why Floreen, Leventhal and Riemer didn't have the guts to show up to a packed room of their constituents to debate me in Olney in 2014. And why they have to rely on the media to protect them from election challengers like me.

No, all Republicans aren't racists. On the other hand, it's ludicrous to make a racial argument about Democratic politicians opposing black Republicans. Their opposition is based on partisanship, not race.

Similarly, it's just irresponsible to reach back 50+ years to criticize the Democratic Party on the basis of race. Some would call it clutching at straws.

      Delete
    3. 5:44: Black Republicans? At least two of the black U.S. Senate candidates opposed by the Montgomery County Council since 2006 were Democrats.

"Reach back 50+ years"? Is this being said by the same guy who was talking about Goldwater and Nixon in his original post? The Democratic Party is the same one that existed during segregation. They just changed strategies when they realized the world was about to leave them behind in the 1960s.

8:23: That's nothing compared to the babbling from the council....some are incoherent, slurry speech, ramped up hyper speech, you name it. Mr. Dyer has a blog and writes on it. Your problem with that is what exactly? It's his blog, he can write what he wants, you don't need to read it if you don't want to.

    Who do you work for?

So why do only 7% or less of African-Americans support today's Republican Party?

    ReplyDelete
