The shop was packing up yesterday, but store management says that you can send a farewell message to employees by emailing bethesda [at] maxbrenner [dot] com. Max Brenner opened in July 2013.
Never understood how this was going to succeed. Don't understand the other high-end chocolate/candy stores' plans, either. There's not enough income potential for Bethesda rents or building costs--how much candy do skinny Bethesda people eat (answer: not very much)?

ReplyDeleteJust because Bethesdan's squeeze into undersized & overpriced yoga gear (made in El Salvador) does not automatically make them skinny. Take a closer look.
ReplyDeleteI had one of the worst service experiences of my life at Max Brenner's. Took an hour to get something simple, and they were really rude. The other new candy store is a mystery to me, too. It's like $7 for a little thing of jelly beans.

ReplyDeleteRestaurants make more sense -- everyone wants to have a bit to eat.... but how many are in the mood for dessert specfically?
Too bad I never got to try this place out, I do enjoy chocolate! But, yeah, tough concept to keep in business in Bethesda I think. Oh, well.

ReplyDeleteA few months after Max Brenner opened I went into the place mid-afternoon for just a hot chocolate. Because of the time of day and being mid-week, there were very few customers there.
ReplyDeleteI ordered one of their hot chocolate specialties and found a seat at a table. I couldn't believe the long wait for it to arrive. And then once I got it, it was luke warm! And the drink itself was thin and reedy, not at all what I would expect from a specialist in chocolate. On top of that, that one luke warm, mediocre tasting hot chocolate was very expensive. I thought I could have made a better one at home from one of those instant packages you buy in the grocery. As a result, I never went back.
