Dog Haus Biergarten coming to Bethesda

Dog Haus Biergarten, a restaurant featuring gourmet hot dogs, hand-crafted sausages, and 100% Angus beef burgers, will open a downtown Bethesda location in the near future. They're taking over the vacant building at 7904 Woodmont Avenue, most recently home to The Parva.

You'll be able to build your own skinless, all-beef hot dog, or choose from one of their signature Haus Dogs, including the bacon-wrapped Downtown Dog, the Free Bird turkey dog, or President Trump's personal favorite, the Scott Baioli, with smoked bacon, garlic aioli, white American cheese, and caramelized onions.

Hand-crafted sausage selections will include kielbasa, currywurst, spicy Italian and chicken fontina. Signature sausages with toppings range from the pastrami and melted mozzarella on spicy Italian "The Fonz," to the even spicier "Another Night in Bangkok," featuring Thai peanut sauce, Haus Slaw, and crushed peanuts atop a spicy Thai currywurst link.

Burger choices include The Freiburger, and The Hangover. Their beef patties are a proprietary grind of chuck and brisket. The retro menu item names extend to the side options, such as The Love Boat, which is your choice of fries or tots, topped with Haus Chili and Haus Slaw.

Dog Haus Biergarten, true to its name, will offer a rotating selection of local craft brews on tap. Other beverage choices will include wine, shakes, floats and soft drinks.

The Parva building has been vacant since the lounge closed in January 2016, one of 10 nightspots to close in downtown Bethesda since Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer's so-called "nighttime economy" initiative ended up wiping out a large chunk of nightlife. Neighbors who complained about the loud music of The Parva in the night will be delighted that the new tenant is going in a restaurant direction, as opposed to being a nightclub.

Dog Haus will compete with the homegrown Bold Bite, which is moving to a new location at Cordell and Norfolk Avenue next week. This will be the first Dog Haus Biergarten east of Colorado, and is part of a major expansion plan for the chain.

  5. 5:53: It's a restaurant, not a nightclub. Did you even read the article? No, the nighttime economy is not "back on track," as you can quickly find out by walking around downtown Bethesda tonight after 10 PM.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well its a Biergarten, and looking at their other locations that are biergartens, they do stay open to 10pm weekdays and 12am weekends. Doesn't have to be a nightclub to contribute to the nightime economy.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Anonymous7:00 AM

Dyer, could you please post your criteria o distinguishing a "restaurant that serves alcohol" from a "nightclub"?

    ReplyDelete
  8. 6:51: Well, we still have a net loss in nightlife, with 10 nightclubs/bars having closed, so the Riemer "nighttime economy" record is not one he can tout. It was a disaster. He couldn't even get one brewery open in downtown Bethesda.

Virginia's governor was recently told how many breweries there are in the state of Maryland. His response? "That's embarrassing."

And this is after 7 years of Riemer! That is embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 7:00: You usually have a dance floor, and some kind of live entertainment, in a nightclub. Applebee's serves alcohol, and I've never heard anybody call it a nightclub.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Anonymous7:07 AM

They're from Colorado, they think differently out there. I like the name.

I agree with Nate. Doesn't have to be a nightclub to contribute to the nighttime economy. Like the CVS reducing night time hours. Or Barnes & Noble doing the same.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anonymous7:13 AM

Seriously, what's with Dyer's obsession with nightclubs? How many people in buttoned-down Bethesda regularly patronize nightclubs anyway? Quality restaurants are certainly a positive addition to the community.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous7:23 AM

Bethesda needs an evening economy initiative. Give people a reason to come into downtown and want to wander around and spend money on impulse purchases. Not nightclubs.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 7:07: Yes, I reported on those. We also lost one of the two 24-hour restaurants in town during that period. The only thing I'm pointing out is that as far as the 10 nightclubs/bars that closed, we still have a net loss.

  14. 7:13: Riemer's the one who brought it up. He failed. Facts.

The German theme is sort of dumb and not a fit here but this may be a good spot for a burger, etc. Better than the total A-hole from Community. I'll be doing back flips when they close their doors.

Dyer, I live in Bethesda, all the "night spots" that closed sucked:

    1. Sasso/Rustique - Had a good night crowd, but the owner was a jerk-off and didn't pay rent (not the fault of the council)
    2. Relic - Went there a few times, it had some cool features, but was run poorly and turned sucky fast - I stopped going
    3. Parva - Total disaster of a place, it was full of thugs that most Bethesdaians wouldn't choose to associate with
    4. Ri-Ra - sees to be a cooperate issue, not unique to Bethesda

I'm not sure what else you count as these 10 net closures, but I did notice that as other new places open, you're still stuck on this 10 net closure thing...shouldn't that number change as new places open?

The comments on both sites, in fact, prove that I have more traffic, and a more engaged audience. Bethesda Magazine has few dissenting comments, because they have a small group of readers, and the majority of that small group support the Montgomery County political machine that Bethesda Magazine functions as the house organ for.

Here, in contrast, you'll find negative troll comments. That only happens when your website is recognized as being so influential, that the County Council and their sycophant toadies have to respond to it publicly. You can sense the rage and helplessness of the resident troll in his childish comments, and now defamatory statements.

I'd be wary as a business of appearing in Bethesda Magazine, because they don't represent people of color on their magazine covers, nor among their all-white reporting staff. I'm a one-man website. But they make the decisions for their site, and it's not a good look to be all-white in a majority-minority jurisdiction like MoCo. Their coverage of the Westbard cemetery story, among others, reflects that lack of diversity.

So you definitely don't want to post defamatory statements about me in speaking to local businesses, because there's so much that can be said truthfully about your magazine. Trust me, you don't want to go there. If you don't stop lying about me, I'm going to start telling the truth about you.

In Montgomery and Prince George's counties, whites were largely replaced by Hispanics, a Washington Post analysis of the detailed census statistics shows. Hispanics outnumber blacks in Montgomery and just edge past whites in Prince George's County.

Barely 49 percent of Montgomery's 972,000 residents are non-Hispanic whites, down from almost 60 percent in 2000 and 72 percent a decade before that. Hispanics rose by two-thirds and make up about 17 percent of the county's population."

" I read the story, which only confirms what I reported - Van Hollen told union leaders to suppress the black vote in 2016." The article does not confirm your claim in any way shape or form.

"His denial is predictable, but doesn't disprove he engaged in voter suppression." The article quotes union leaders in Maryland who dispute the claim of black voter suppression, listing several initiatives taken by Van Hollen to black voters. The article cites the overwhelming support by black political leaders in Maryland of Van Hollen over Edwards in the Primary election. 32 out of 36 Congressional Black Caucus members supported Van Hollen over Edwards.

"In fact, Hillary Clinton herself bodyslammed him for his voter suppression plan, which cost her votes." This statement is not supported by the reporting in Shattered, the basis of your claim. There is no claim that Hillary lost votes; and while a tough women, she most certainly did not bodyslam Van Hollen. Some context here would help: Hillary rated Van Hollen a "7" for support, her worst score, because if his support of Obama in 2008. The allegation made to her by an uncited source, that you are repeating here again without any confirmation, is disputed in the article cited above -- by union leaders and black political leaders in Maryland.

7:13: Wrong! Edwards won the black vote, despite whatever underhanded tactics Van Hollen used to get endorsements from corrupt politicians. That's why Edwards had so few power players behind her, because she wasn't part of the cartel.

It's important you say the Hillary quote was disputed only "by union leaders and black political leaders in Maryland" - because Hillary is not disputing it, the actual person who said it. Those other leaders would be punished if they were to tell the truth now about Van Hollen's plan. We know that, because we're witnessing now the institutional racism within the all-Democrat Montgomery County government against a historic black church in Bethesda. We've witnessed it in their failure to support black candidates for the U.S. Senate, and now we're stuck with an all-white-male pair of Maryland senators. Sad!
