First look: REI at Pike & Rose (Photos)

About a week before the grand opening, the new REI Co-op sporting goods store interior at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda is finished, and inventory is being loaded in. Bicycle wheels adorn a wall on one side of the showroom, and a mural another. There appears to be a cafe-style seating area inside, as well. Some REI stores have coffee shops inside.

Outside, there is a large public art mural with a rock-climbing theme. There is a large tree holding up one corner of the building, and a seating area with benches. The store has among the most unique door handles you've ever seen in a retail setting. REI will have its own surface parking lot, in keeping with its more traditional Rockville Pike retail character. Spaces are for REI customers only, and there is a 2-hour time limit. REI opens on April 25.

What is the difference between co-op and their regular store?

Robert, you are definitely not cool enough to shop there...then again most of the posers that live in the DMV aren't really cool enough to shop there. It's a fact.

@6:24 all REI stores are a co-op. They are a co-op in that if you pay the one time $15 membership fee, you get a percentage of your total purchases back once a year (usually in March sometime)

6:47 AM It's a big box store on the Pike. Not exactly exclusive :)

I can see George's point. REI used to be a store full of specialty gear for people who actually went on adventures. Buying a $400 rain jacket to hike old rag doesn't mean you're outdoorsey, just means your a tool with too much money to spend.
