MoCo issues violation to Bainbridge Wisconsin property in Bethesda (Photos)

The Bainbridge Wisconsin property, formerly home to a gas station at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Hampden Lane, has received a code violation notice from Montgomery County. A County inspector cites concrete debris, dirt, and old street lights as solid waste that needs to be cleaned up. The form also exhorts the landowner to mow the grass, and something else, but the handwriting is illegible on that line. Many downtown residents have complained about the state of the property, which has been in stasis as Bainbridge awaited passage of the new zoning that would allow greater density on this site.

    1. 5:07: Actually, it's taken Hans &Co. a couple of years to respond to citizen complaints about this site's condition and appearance. That's what happens when you don't have a resident of Bethesda on the Council. There have been dozens of issues I've had to address and get action on as an activist and journalist, because if left to the impotent County Council, they'd never get fixed.

    This is the first time you've written about any problems at this site, so you can't really claim that you "have gotten action on this as a journalist".

    It's a prime location, but it could be primer if they are able to include adjacent sites such as Tommy Joe's and Pines of Rome, and get a height increase. The stasis makes sense in this context. Given that Tommy Joe's has moved and that the owner of Pines of Rome has purchased the former Matuba, that day should be coming soon.

    The site is an eyesore, but I'm glad they held out for the additional height/density even though they'll have to jump through more hoops to get it. A 14-story building on this site would be a massive underutilization.

    Last I heard the giant assemblage the owners NREA/Bainbridge had with Washington Property, Chevy Chase Land, Douglas, and AOTA was on the verge of breaking up, related to issues with the abandonment of Hampden Ln.

    I miss getting Jerry's cheese steaks at the mini store in the gas station. It was a rare fast food location in Bethesda
