Sears Auto Center closes in Bethesda...is Sears next? (Photos)

Sears Auto Center has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Signage has been stripped from the building facade, although some of the lettering has left behind a ghostly image. Now only the White Oak Sears Auto Center remains in Montgomery County.

The closure has added urgency to the debate over when the Sears store at the mall might close. Westfield has already purchased the store building from Sears. But this auto center closure comes as a knowledgeable source tells me Sears is planning a new round of store closures in the coming days or weeks. Notably, this set of closures will now include some profitable Sears locations.

It's sad. I was there just recently and a nice woman helped me with a tool exchange. The real issue for me is the tools. I don't like Sears going away. But if Home Depot across the street sells many of the Craftsman tools and keeps their no questions asked exchange policy, it'll help.

Yes, Lakeforest one is probably still there. I only ever used the Sears Auto Center because it was convenient and you could get a meal or shop while waiting.

The Sears store is probably soon to follow. The older re-development plans actually moved the Auto Center to a new building. With Sears and the Auto Center now out of the way they can expand all they want out this side.

That Sears Auto Center was a waste of valuable space. Even a few extra parking spots would be an upgrade, but Westfield should build a Whole Foods with an apartment above.

Sure would be nice to have a grocery store there.

Sears over in Fairfax at Fair Oaks Mall has or is downgrading to being on just one floor rather than two.

7:25PM is a fake name for fake indignation. A name made up to disparage my wife, Anna, who stopped commenting here months ago.

There are enough Whole Foods around. Wegmans would be great. Ranked by Consumer Reports as best in quality and price!
