Thanks to a Montgomery County Council asleep at the switch for 40 years, until developers woke them by waving money under their nose, the Westbard area of Bethesda became the world capital of self-storage. Of course, high demand for storage space played an equal role. A few months after the Montgomery County Planning Board approved a controversial new self-storage business on River Road - and then ran out of the room to avoid their constituents, more self storage units are on the way.
ezStorage at 5329 Westbard Avenue (behind the Residences at the Capital Crescent Trail Because We're Going for the Guinness Record for Longest Apartment Building Name) has requested a construction permit from Montgomery County for an addition to its existing six-level storage facility.
Dyer really hates free-market capitalism.
ReplyDeleteBut loves reporting on silly things like stores closing in the mall that no one's ever heard of.
ReplyDeleteZzzzzzzzzzzz

As the number of smaller multi-family apartments and condos increase, you will see more an more options for affordable self storage. Unfortunately most apartment buildings and condos provide very little storage for their residents, who are often down-sizing their residences, but have not downsized their stuff. It’s always good to purge and donate when your move, but sometimes hard to give up your stuff.
ReplyDeleteMan who opposed mixed-use development in Westbard also opposes the type of development that his mixed-use opposition naturally led to.
ReplyDeleteHypocrite.
How any other site would have reported this:
ReplyDelete"ezStorage at 5329 Westbard Avenue (behind the Residences at the Capital Crescent Trail) has requested a construction permit from Montgomery County for an addition to its existing six-level storage facility."
And it would have been one of several "short items" for a single article.
It's clearly what the NIMBY residents want since they whine about traffic, 6-story 'skyscrapers' (lol), minorities, etc. anytime nice retail and apartments options are proposed.
ReplyDeleteNow they're getting exactly what they wanted: a neighborhood still stuck in a 1960s time warp with crappy fast-food, liquor stores, storage, 60-year old apartments, auto repair shops, hazardous waste dumps, and other "others side of the tracks" uses.
Well at least they still have that crappy Whole Foods...until it eventually moves to nicer digs in downtown Bethesda.
7:07 AM You're right, if it was written on another site by an out of town blogger, they would have no context to add to the story. Context is important, my friend.
ReplyDeleteReading Dyer's attack pieces and insults over the last few days really shows how alike he is to the dense and neurotic president he idolizes.
ReplyDelete7:44 = #UnsignedDyer
ReplyDeleteThe MoCo cartel and Hapless Hans strike again!
ReplyDelete7:50 AM Nope, I wrote 7:44 AM and I'm not Dyer. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteIsn't Robert Dyer the one who cries bitter tears every time a gas station is torn down?
ReplyDelete8:03 - OH YES YOU ARE!
ReplyDeleteQUESADILLLLLLLLLLLLUH
TARDO!
Westbard is the armpit of Bethesda. Dingy old buildings, beat-up streets and sidewalks, wires and crap everywhere. I hear the "Good Times" theme song in my head every time I drive around over there. The market clearly wants self-storage and it's sadly an improvement over what you have now.
ReplyDeleteYou losers deserve it you wanted to complain about real retail coming now it got your retail downsized and now you get more storage units!!!! lol its quite comical and you get what you deserve thank the nimbys like Dyer the Tard and the 3 people from the church that dont have family even buried they just need something to complain about for stopping the actual development that would help your properties and values and instead you guys get to live behind shitty storage units.. Job well done Retards!!!!!! Quesaaaaa dillllllllluhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ReplyDeleteWisconsin Avenue has a nice landscaped median strip, with turn lanes.
ReplyDeleteRiver Road has "suicide" lanes. LOL
Dyere thannk you for lettings us know the Alpecca store at the mall is closing, you really are getting the people the important stories, because you know and I know the alpecca store was a huge hit and our community really needs it!!!!
ReplyDeleteTardooooo!!!!!

ReplyDeleteWhat would be the County's basis for denying permission to build a self-storage facility?
That’s a really good question. Mister Dyer?
Delete9:37 AM not in the community's interest
ReplyDeleteIf you think the "Westbard" area is an "arm pit", you need to talk to some realtors who cover the neighborhoods and get educated on how desirable it is.
ReplyDeleteDyer is able to put news into better context because he knows Bethesda and knows MoCo.
Yes, folks want an upgraded shopping center.
"not in the community's interest"
ReplyDeleteWhy is it "in the community's interest" to have 6 gas stations, a McDonald's, a 7-11 and a beer and wine store, but not a self-storage facility? Please elaborate.
"Dyer is able to put news into better context because he knows Bethesda and knows MoCo."
ReplyDeleteMore anonymous Attaboys for Tarnation Bob.
Following up on 11:12's comment - what is the specific nuisance that a self-storage creates for your community, 9:45? Just saying you don't like it, doesn't entitle you to shut down a legitimate business.
ReplyDelete#dodgingdyer is gone
ReplyDeleteHow was Robert Dyer able to publish his article about this morning's fire at Glen Echo, at 11:08 PM last night? Something smells fishy.
ReplyDelete11:24: Nobody said anything about "shutting down a legitimate business."
ReplyDeleteIt's not the fault of the self-storage companies that the County Council waited 40 years to pay attention to the Westbard sector, and then blew it by letting developers control the outcome. I noted that in the article - the demand is there, and that's why the self-storage is there.
11:12: I would very much welcome more fast food and more gas stations.
9:37: Nowhere did I advocate "denying" this project, which is a by-right development.
9:27/7:01: Wrong. No retail development was going to be on the ezStorage site, old sport.
6:18: You're thinking of Hans Riemer & the Council, who only visit socialist and Communist countries on overseas economic development "missions." No wonder our economy is moribund!
12:39: Pacific Time, Einstein.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog but I have to ask why do you keep it in pacific time? Don’t your other blogs post in eastern time?
Delete2:33 - #DodgingDyer won’t answer that question, it’s been asked several times.
DeleteI am new to this blog and enjoy the content. How come the site is in pacific time?
Delete"the Westbard area of Bethesda became the world capital of self-storage"
ReplyDeleteMore silly hyperbole. There are twice as many self-storage facilities in and around Parklawn Drive, and they are larger.
Well, Eistein could figure out how to set his clock to the correct time zone, Dumbass!

ReplyDelete#dodgingdyer could you answer the questions posed to you? Either as blogger or as candidate. Thank you.
