Salsa with Silvia coming to downtown Bethesda

Washington, D.C. dance studio Salsa with Silvia is expanding to downtown Bethesda. They will open a new location at 4731 Elm Street this fall. Potbelly and Tropical Smoothie Cafe are the existing tenants in that building, which is located next to The Barking Dog.

Founder Silvia Alexiev began teaching in this area after moving here from Chicago in 2009. Her salsa method became so popular, she had to hire and train additional instructors to keep up with the demand. The D.C. location has now been recognized as the largest Latin dance studio operating in the region.

Looks like it could fill the entire second floor of the space above Potbelly’s and Tropical Smoothie, about 6500 SF. They also have a nice covered outdoor terrace overlooking Elm Street, which might be fun if they open up the doors during dance lessons. Sounds like a fun addition to downtown Bethesda, and a nice use for a space that has been vacant for quite some time. Combined with Jaleo, maybe this is the start of Bethesda’s Latin Quarter.

Sorry, my bad, it looks like the upper level is 3155 SF, but a nice column free interior. Should make a nice dance studio.

Here is a link to their DC location. It looks like a real multi-purpose venue for dance lessons, banquet or wedding rentals, corporate and special events. Looking at the floor plan for Bethesda, they will have to add an elevator for ADA accessibility. Again, I think this space might be a nice flexible asset to downtown, especially with the covered roof terrace with open views to Elm Street.

The new dance studio, combined with the future Elm apartments, the Wilson office tower, the Metro Tower apartments, the new Elm Street Plaza with Red and Purple Line access, this neck of Bethesda is really about to be transformed. Eight large new retail or restaurant spaces will soon line this short block, connecting Bethesda Row and Wisconsin.

If the County had forced Ourisman to tear down the encroaching garage, you can bet Dyer would have screamed, "MoCo Cartel's War On Cars!"

As it is, Ourisman gave up more land that they encroached on, and the Trail is now two feet wider than it was before.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the total width of the encroachment was about 2 feet, and at least 8 feet from the trail itself?

Her name suggests she's married and "Alexiev" is her Russian husband's last name. Russian females would take on the female version of the last name (Alexieva). So the only time you see a woman with a male last name is if she's not Russian and just took her Russian husband's (or father's) last name directly and the other party to the marriage is not Russian.

@Anonymous 4:14 pm, « Correct me if I’m wrong.. ». You’re wrong. The specifics are public information. Look it up instead of asserting false information and making an unfounded comment.

7:09: What an unhelpful comment. If 4:14 is wrong — perhaps provide a link to some better information? I looked at several stories on this topic myself and none have specific measurements on the encroachment, etc.

So how much was the encroachment, Mr. Snottypants @ 7:09?

7:09 sounds like Dyer. "You're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong"...followed by no data actually supporting his claim.

All you Dyer haters are full of shit. You do NO basic research, provide NO useful information, make NO interesting comments. And when you’re called out on being factually wrong, you want to be spoonfed the facts. You’re lazy, negative, and a complete waste.

I don’t know why Silvia’s nationality is an issue, and I certainly don’t know why people are speculating about it when her website tells everyone (she is Bulgarian).
More relevant are posts on Yelp saying that she condones the unprofessional and unacceptable behavior of one of her male instructors.

Hey, let me help « Correct me if I’m wrong » and his friends, and bring light to the darkness.
Yeah, it’s pretty difficult to find this online. First you have to navigate to the MoCo Planning Dept site. Then you use the search function (top right) by typing in « Ourisman » Now — and this is the hard part — you have to choose the second item, the one about downtown Bethesda. Watch out! The first item is about Montgomery Mall, which is in a different part of Bethesda.
It’s actually pretty interesting. It shows that Ourisman encroached 20 feet! « Correct me » pulled his « 2 feet » out of his ass so he could attack Dyer. Funny, huh?
If Dyer isn’t the first to report something, y’all give him a hard time. (But why should he always be first?) If he reports a change of signage, y’all lie and say it happened two weeks ago. (But who cares?) If he ever got anything wrong, y’all would shriek out to Heaven. (But that would only be human. The WSJ recently reported that the President of Russia is Vladimir Trump.)
Y’all are different. You can throw out whatever nonsense comes into your heads. When you’re corrected, you can whine about how hard it is to do a three-step internet search.
Dyer’s diligence in contrast is admirable. Y’all don’t have to agree with his views and if you have reasoned rejoinders, great. (But my all-time favorite rejoinder is the complaint that Dyer never says what should be done to arrest MoCo’s decline as a business location. That person lives under a rock.)
Buck up, y’all. Prove @8:55 AM wrong! Show him or her that you aren’t lazy and negative! Learn how to conduct a simple internet search! If you just can’t stop attacking Dyer, stick to insults and avoid « facts » that are easily disproved. Make us proud, « Correct me if I’m wrong » , and post stuff that doesn’t make you look like an idiot!

    @ 3:22 PM - I searched MontgomeryCountyPlanning.org.

This was the only relevant document. Posting a link, because you were too lazy to do so.

    https://montgomeryplanningboard.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Ourisman-Honda-at-CCT-Mandatory-Referral-staff-report-7-20-2017.pdf

It says nothing about Ourisman's encroachment on the CCT being "20 feet".

Well done, @6;23 PM ! You followed my instructions successfully! Glad you posted a link so your fellow Dyer haters don’t have to do all that hard work.
But you failed to follow my other instructions. I told you to quit posting easily disprovable « facts ».
Hint: to see the 20 foot encroachment, you have to READ THE DOCUMENT.
Now you want me to tell you which page it’s on, right?
Or maybe I need to copy it, highlight the exact part, and post it here?

Well, what's stopping you? Why are you stalling?

Thanks, @7:43 PM. You make me realize I wasn’t clear. My bad.
This blog is exceptional. Where else do you find so many posts trashing the blogger? Most people just quit reading a blog if they don’t like it.
Day after day, month after month, virtually every story, literally thousands of posts — hostile, nasty, sometimes vile.
    Why?
What kind of person spends so much time on such pointless activity?
« Correct me if I’m wrong » (and he is) appealed to me as a case in point. Most of you criticize Dyer for something he writes. « Correct me » just made stuff up to criticize him.
At first I was going to correct him with a reference and a quote. Then I realized he would shrug it off and do the same thing over and over.
I tried to find a way to avoid that. To create a dialog that sheds light on him and others.
Maybe I was too harsh. I couldn’t believe that anyone would find it hard to get the relevant info online.
Let’s agree. I will post chapter and verse. You (and others) say what motivates you.

Keep stalling, Dyer. You've got nothing.

Also, the search function on the MontgomeryCountyPlanning.org site is not "top right".

  19. All y'all so worried about why someone posts here, what's their motivation.
    Lemme help you with that...

Dyer asks for it. His name-calling, his bombastic conspiracy theories, his exaggeration of the truth, and his suggestions of self-mutilation. All of these beg for dispute. Which, let's be honest here, is what keeps people coming back every day.
