A guy is out this morning in the 5200 block of River Road in Bethesda, and on nearby Ridgefield Road, painting the fire hydrants white. No public announcement was made about this. While fire hydrant colors often have meaning, I don't recall Montgomery County ever having all-white hydrants in this area. There have been white hydrants with green tops, but not all-white. White in other jurisdictions usually signifies a public water system hydrant.
It's primer. The green gets painted later.

ReplyDeleteI have a hydrant in front of my house and it was painted white (well more like grey) about a year ago. They did it to all the hydrants in my area (Bradley Hills/Edgemoor/English Village). I assume there's some good reason?

It's a hydrant. More likely a local resident does damage to it than it doing anything to a person.
Robert. Is there a legal requirement for a public announcement for painting fire hydrants?
ReplyDeleteJust think...if Robbie hadn't been eating at the McDonald's at the exact time the "guy" was painting the hydrant, he wouldn't have been able to report this breaking news.
ReplyDeleteIf you check on your Google machine there, you'll learn that WSSC owned hydrants are all being painted white. They'll have different colored tops (mostly green) depending on their water pressure, which is standardized by the big fire industry association.

The hydrants are being primed white. Then the tops will be painted green and the main body will be painted grey. WSSC is now known as “WSSC Water” after a recent “rebranding”. Look for all new signage on structures and new decals on vehicles in the coming months.
