The Riggsby to take over Kapnos Kouzina space at Bethesda Row

A source tells me celebrity chef Michael Schlow will take over the vacant Kapnos Kouzina space at 4900 Hampden Lane at Bethesda Row. He is expected to open a new Bethesda outpost of his Dupont Circle restaurant, The Riggsby. Schlow already operates the fast-casual Prima right next door.

Last April, I was told by a different source that The Riggsby would be the tenant here. It makes sense that Schlow's restaurant group would have waited to first successfully launch Prima before turning attention to the sit-down Riggsby next door. Michael Schlow Restaurant Group describes the Riggsby concept as retro-American, "with a flash of old-school Continental."

This is great news! I hope they take out the black window film, so we can see into the restaurant. Kapnos always looked closed, even when in was packed with people.

The menu looks promising, a bit like a cross between Silver and the Woodmont Grill. They seem to emphasize a comfortable dining experience with a neighborly feel, and a warm environment on their website.

It will be ice to see this void being filled with a new place.

If the food tastes as good as their photos from the DC restaurant look, and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, this is a game changer. See, this is the difference between crappy chains and restaurant groups. This chef has built a restaurant group. Looking at the DC build out and food you can see the difference right away between the two. That space is relatively small but this is really big news for DC. Finally, a go-to place that doesn't look, feel and smell like a big, national chain.
