New Capital Crescent Trail plaza celebrates car culture

The new plaza for users of the Capital Crescent Trail on Bethesda Avenue at Ourisman Honda is taking final shape. Ironically, a central feature of the plaza for hikers and bikers is a monument to the automobile, and to the history of auto sales in downtown Bethesda. A tribute to "We drivers!," the elevated plaque recalls auto dealerships of Bethesda's recent and distant past, and the automobile's role as a "tangible means of living 'the American Dream.'"

Cars are the bane of my existence. Do you drivers know how annoying you are?

In what world is “We Drivers!” any form of proper English?

I really don’t get it. It can’t be an African American slang shortened version of “We are bad”, shortened to “We Bad!” If so, why?

It can’t be a shortened version of “We the drivers” as in “we the people”.

I just can’t sort out why this odd title was chosen. Somebody help me because “we confused”.

I get that it is a plaza in an area that was formerly populated by auto dealerships, but it seems odd to memorialize this activity. Plazas are about pedestrians and maybe bike riders, but for the most part, the antithesis of private automobile ownership and use. It seems like who ever came up with this plaque is trying to honor car sales and ownership like it is something that should be memorialized. I don’t get it.

A much better idea would be a story of the history of the CCT and maybe a nice map, with mile markers and destinations, like a real trailhead map. I know the CCT does have an older beat-up plaque that does just this about 200 feet south on the CCT so maybe they felt it was redundant, and came up with this very stupid idea to honor “We Drivers!”.

We be drivers yo - likely paying homage to those who actually cry for bike lanes/bikes over cars/need others to help them cross the street (Little Falls/CCT) cant afford a car or hold a job with such wonderful language skills. Inset metal L - Where the language thrives!

Is it weird ourisman was allowed to put a large monument to themselves in our newest rare urban open space?

    The grammar is correct.
It would be easier to parse if it were not so short. For example, it might say "We drivers find all these things interesting."

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. . . ."
From the St. Crispin's Day Speech, made by the title character in Act IV of Shakespeare's "Henry V" (c. 1599).

That blue Honda sign looks a bit too bright and out of place (maybe it's the photo... haven't seen it myself)

I still don’t get the “We Drivers!” title on the plaque. Makes no sense to me. Somebody please explain how this makes any sense...

The land belongs to Ourisman. Evidently the lease agreement with the County doesn’t address signage, so Ourisman can do what it wants.

The poorly done plaque graphics and text were apparently composed and produced by Montgomery Parks, according to the logo on the plaque. The graphic design of the photos are very odd and causal in nature. Who ever did this is clearly not trained in graphic design, or communication.

    The Honda sign is fine.

Diane Jones' wages should have been garnished to compensate the county for the way she mishandled this.

The brand new wood benches have already been damaged by skateboarders. This is why we can’t have nice things.

They need to install metal edge guards with anti-grinding bumps, or these will be totally ruined within a month.
