Friendship Heights construction update: Potbelly (Photos)

Things are moving slowly on the interior construction of Potbelly Sandwich Shop at 4459 Willard Avenue in the Village of Friendship Heights. I say this because the sign went up seven or eight weeks ago, and the inside is still not very far along.

    A large construction barricade has been built on Bethesda Lane, for the new Hawker’s Asian Street Food. From what I’ve read online at other locations at least, the line to get in can be as much as 2 hours on Friday and Saturday evenings. Downtown hasn’t had a new high demand restaurant like this in awhile.

    Regarding the CCT tunnel, ‘You can give your feedback on this, and the design of the project, at Wednesday night's meeting”” but they are not apparently welcome on this site.

    I agree the country should have linked the cost of the tunnel to the minor masterplan amendment, but at this point in time I would like to raise another question. Do we really need a tunnel?

    The county is about to install a very nice surface route with a separated bike path that will connect the CCT at Ourisman all the way to Elm Park and the newly extended CCT that will be ead6 of downtown. This separated bike path will start on the south side of Bethesda Avenue in front of Pottery Barn, then cross the intersection diagonally with a special ”all stop” signal for the bike path. It will the run on the north side of Bethesda Avenue and cross Wisconsin in a second ”all stop” signal.

    These systems are designed to create very safe protected and signal protected paths for bike to cross two very busy intersections. In this time of fiscal stress, do we really need a second separate path under Wisconsin, in a very expensive tunnel. The grade is predicted to be quite steep, and may include a few curves that limit visibility. As I recall the old tunnel was a bit scary for some folks, being a bit isolated.

    I know that the portion under the Apex building is already constructed, but I really wonder why we need two parallel paths to cross Wisconsin. The proposed tunnel would not eliminate the Bethesda Avenue/Woodmont Avenue crossing, so if traffic can be safely crossed there, why not assume the Wisconsin crossing at grade would be adequate, if not superior to an expensive sloping, curving and perhaps intimidating tunnel?

    If even a portion of the cost of a tunnel could be applied to an even better surface route, would we all be better off? If the surface path is not ideal, maybe improve it further with a more substantial barrier, better landscaping, nicer bike crossing signals, better pedestrian/bike lane lighting, more creative paving, or better signage. Certainly cheaper than the tunnel cost. Let the developer repurpose the already constructed portion of the tunnel as a linear bike storage facility, and repurpose the proposed two level bike parking garage as a nice retail space, maybe even a big bike store that would face the Capital Crescent Civic Green.

    I guess it comes down to the question of safety. An inexperienced bike rider would likely prefer a slower, but more level pathway, even if it required two stops to wait for a protected crossing signal. These inexperienced rides might also be a bit intimidated in an underground tunnel with curves and fast moving spandex clad bike commuters who would not mind a bit of grade elevation if they don’t have to stop.

    Having both a tunnel and a surface trail would be great, but very expensive and currently unfunded. My only thought was to make sure the surface route is as good as it can be, even if they need to spend a few bucks more, in lieu of the much more expensive tunnel option. I bet the developer might even pay the county to enhance the surface route if required, if it meant they could repurpose the 250 bike parking garage as retail space and use the already built tunnel for bike parking. They might need to add a fire exit stair near Wisconsin, but would gain lots of retail space with very tall ceilings, facing the new Civic Green.

    On the other hand, we can always build the tunnel in the future. I predict that when the CCT is opened to Silver Spring, the new Red Line entrance, Purple Line Station and perhaps the Bethesda Market and new underground county parking deck are all built, this area will get much more bike traffic.

    In the lifetime of Metro in MoCo, I've never heard anyone refer to the "Takoma Metro Station." Maybe in DC, but not here, where it is commonly referred to as the Takoma Park Metro station. As a lifelong resident who actually used the station when attending classes at the beautiful Takoma Park campus of Montgomery College, I can once again issue a Carpetbagger Alert for a clear carpetbagger such as you.

    The Takoma Metro station is not in the beautiful city of Takoma Park in vivibund Montgomery County. It is in the Takoma neighborhood of the District of Columbia, just west of Eastern Avenue.

    I don't know what random weirdos you talked to as you were walking to and from your classes at Montgomery College*, but the name of the station has always been "Takoma", alone. On the Metro train announcements. On the system maps. On the Metrobus and Ride-On maps and schedules.

    Why don't you just admit you made a mistake, instead of doubling-down and gaslighting?

    Moving the goalposts is an informal fallacy in which evidence presented in response to a specific claim is dismissed and some other (often greater) evidence is demanded. That is, after an attempt has been made to score a goal, the goalposts are moved to exclude the attempt. The problem with changing the rules of the game is that the meaning of the result is changed, too.

    In the case of the Metro station between Fort Totten and Takoma, a reader pointed out that the name of this station is "Takoma" rather than "Takoma Park" as blogger Robert Dyer had written, incorrectly, on his "East County" blog a few days ago. Pointing out the correct name of the station is hardly "moving the goalposts".

    It is in fact Robert Dyer who is making the logical fallacy, by citing imaginary "MoCo residents" to back up his erroneous claim about the station name.

Just as a tourist would use a travel guide as reference, you went with the official title. Alas, you were wrong, just as a MoCo limousine liberal would mispronounce "Stanton" in Virginia.

    Caught as a carpetbagger, you then "demanded greater evidence," moving the argument to the specific street address of the station - totally irrelevant to what MoCo natives call the station.

    Here's a definition that applies to you:

    There are no "elevated portions" of the "Glen Echo streetcar line" (actually Cabin Jon streetcar line", not "Glen Echo streetcar line"), because it ran at surface level. Short railroad bridges and viaducts are not "elevated railroads".

    The Glen Echo streetcar has many trestle sections, some of which remain and are crumbling in the woods on the Maryland side of the route. There were elevated sections between Georgetown University and what is now the Montessori School of Washington on the other side of Foxhall Road. I know because I rode under one in a car hundreds of times, Saul. You were living in some out-of-state hellhole at that time, and have no clue about the Glen Echo streetcar.

    The streetcar did not terminate at Glen Echo. It terminated at the south end of the Cabin John Bridge. People who were actually born here recognize the gravelly area opposite the west end of Wilson Lane at MacArthur Boulevard. Thus, it is named the "Cabin John streetcar line".

    "Elevated" has a specific meaning when referring to railroads - meaning running on a continuous aerial structure along and over a street. The Silver Line running through Tysons Corner is an example of an elevated line. Rail lines running on the surface, on embankments in private right-of-way, or across short bridges do not meet this definition.

    Also, the bridge on the Cabin John Line at Foundry Creek (M Street at the southwest corner of the Georgetown University campus) is a steel bridge, not a "trestle". "Trestle" is not a synonym for "rail bridge". It refers to a specific type of wooden structure.

    You also obviously are not familiar with the topography of the streetcar line. Indeed, there are elevated sections, including those that remain in the woods past Glen Echo. You are also 100% wrong that a trestle is only a wooden structure. The CCT uses a metal trestle by Arizona Avenue that is called a...trestle!

    I've not only lived here my whole life, but am an expert on railroads, and your arguments are just factually and empirically wrong.

    Funny how your article on Metro in Virginia omits this week's news that the opening of the second phase of the Silver Line - which will give Virginians a direct connection to Dulles Airport for the first time - has been delayed for at least a year, possibly much longer.

    Also, I note that your time-stamps for today's article - which is the only news on all four blogs of "Suburban News Network" - is incorrect. Even accounting for the fact that the Bethesda blog's clock is 3 hours behind lifelong-Bethesda-resident time, the article was posted well after 9:00 AM Eastern, yet all four have the time-stamp of "8:00 AM" ("5:00 AM" for the Bethesda blog).

That would be a really dumb route, especially if it's also going to Clarksburg. Going from Metro Center to Dulles would be 60 miles one-way, not just dumb but a logistical nightmare.

    Do you ever actually think things through before you write them?

    Let's be optimistic and assume the Purple Line and BRT fill a feed and alleviate some congestion in those corridors.

    The biggest problem is still I-270 to the bridge, which has been flashing red for a couple of decades at least. Our elected officials continue to put the figurative piece of masking tape over the dashboard warning light. Meanwhile Virginia seems to be willing to make the tough decisions for short term pain and longer term positive outcomes.

    And the Silver Line is quite successful- all of those corporate HQs like Capital One certainly appreciate the new Metro stations steps from their doors. Tysons is being transformed while White Flint has stalled out (except for Pike & Rose). We didn't get the "muscular" urban White Flint that our council promised.

    -The old Comsat site is adjacent to I-270 but well out of the walkshed of MD 355.

    -Lakeforest Mall is out of the walkshed of I-270 and most of the site is even outside of the walkshed of MD 355.

    -The fairgrounds are within the walkshed of both MD 355 and I-270, but I'm not sure why you want to redevelop it. Where do you propose to hold the annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, a beloved tradition for over a century for lifelong residents?

    -You can't really design a route that would directly serve all three sites.

    Not really. The most congested area of Old Georgetown Road is to the north, between Grosvenor Lane and I-270. This stretch isn't that bad, even in rush hours. Wisconsin Avenue is far worse.

    Old Georgetown Road south of McKinley Street has always been two lanes each way, and the bottleneck at the transition there isn't really that bad. Although it seems weird that they are leaving the part of Old Georgetown Road between McKinley Street and Cedar Lane as three lanes each way. Or maybe that's because there is already that very nice path along the NIH campus.
