Bethesda construction update: 8001 Woodmont (Video+Photos)

Installation of one of the most-awaited features of JBG Smith's 8001 Woodmont (rebranding of 7900 Wisconsin Avenue) development is now underway. What was shown in renderings as a mirrored ceiling of a pedestrian pass-through has been just substructure for a few months. But a reflective surface is now being attached. So far it is more of a kaleidoscope/funhouse mirror effect, but the installation is far from complete.

    Thanks for the update!

Any word why the construction has slowed dramatically, even before Covid-19. It seems like the exterior brick and window installation just slowed to a trickle several months ago. I know that JBG Smith is asking permission to build fewer, but larger units, which would have stopped interior unit construction, but not the exterior envelope. I wonder if a subcontractor went bankrupt or got kicked off the project.

I see they are proposing to add outdoor seating on both sides of the pedestrian passage, under the mirrored metal panels, which will be a cool place to hang out if some nice restaurants or cafes move in. The large Trader Joe’s would sure be welcome at this site, compared to the very narrow aisles, and tiny footprint of the one on the south end of town.

I also noted that contractors were painting a large existing masonry wall on the west face of the building to the north of this project. I thought the Artena project was about to start construction. Odd that anyone would paint a large wall that would be torn down soon. I wonder if that caper, and the Toll Brother's condo tower to the north are both on a long hold, or even canceled.
