Federal government fishing for a better office space deal than downtown Bethesda
An unidentified federal agency has an expiring lease at Bethesda Towers on East-West Highway, and the General Services Administration is soliciting offers of better deals elsewhere in the region, Bisnow reports. The GSA is seeking a five-year lease for 110,000-126,000 SF in suburban Maryland. It does have a five-year renewal option on the current lease, so it appears the GSA is testing the market for a better deal. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and U.S. Marine Mammal Commission are the two agencies housed at Bethesda Towers currently, Bisnow says.
GSA does this with every lease expiration to get taxpayers the best deal. They never renew without issuing a prospectus. Montgomery County and Prince George's County are usually grouped together (meaning agencies in one jurisdiction can move to the other and vice versa), except in special cases where the search may be expanded to the entire Capital Region (like the FBI headquarters).
ReplyDeleteIn most cases, the agencies ultimately remain where they are since its very expensive for a large federal agency to relocate. I would expect that to be the case here purely due to lack of alternatives, but the current administration is unpredictable and isn't a fan of the CPSC.
8:11, thank you for your very helpful insight!
