La Madeleine demolition update (Photos)
Say goodbye to the French chateau at 7607 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. La Madeleine is being pulverized into rubble even as you are reading this. In its place, believe it or not, you will get a high-rise apartment building. Mon Dieu!
Glad to see this is finally underway. Hopefully there's some good ground level retail and just maybe it'll encourage another supermarket tenant to open up in the old Safeway space.
I'm amused by these cheerleaders for Bethesda's high-rise development utopia who fantasize that new developments will attract specific retail outlets like Amazon Prime, especially when the same retailer just opened a new outlet one metro stop down at Friendship Heights. Don't you know you are supposed to jettison your cars and use metro to get to Amazon Prime? These people remind me of trained seals with their mouths open, waiting for the feeder to toss them a fish from a bucket.

ReplyDeleteWas that the site of Dart Drug or of Drug Fair? I'm ancient and can no longer remember.
ReplyDeleteThere is a small retail space in the plans. Maybe an Amazon Prime would be a good fit for the former Safeway space.
