Right lane of Old Georgetown Rd. between Wisconsin, Woodmont to close Oct. 11 until Feb. 2024

Clark Construction is preparing to begin work on the redevelopment of the La Madeleine property at 7607 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. The Bethesda-based firm announced yesterday that the project will require a lengthy closure of the right lane of Old Georgetown between Wisconsin and Woodmont Avenues. Pedestrian access along that side of the street will be facilitated through the closed right lane.

The lane will close on or about October 11, 2021, and will remain closed to vehicular traffic through February 2024, weather permitting. Developer Washington Property Company is building a 225' tall residential building with ground floor retail, which will carry the firm's Solaire branding.

Why a two block lane closure all the way to Wisconsin? I would think just the north lane of Old Georgetown Road between Commerce Lane and Woodmont would need to be closed, the stretch in front the former La Madeline.

Glad this is finally getting rolling.

Robert: Any news on the old Safeway space yet? Doesn't seem like there's been any interest by a new tenant. It would be a great location for a new supermarket with this new residential tower right next door. Would love to see a Whole Foods come in right there.

  3. Why can't local construction take place on the property itself?

La Madeleine will not be missed. It was extremely overrated. This new Paris place coming to the former Smashburger space sadly won't be any better.

"Why can't local construction take place on the property itself?"

Is this a joke? They're digging several dozen feet into the Earth. Obviously the sidewalk will need to be closed. Obviously those pedestrians will need somewhere to walk. Obviously the adjacent lane is the common path to choose. Have you never seen a building go up before?

Almost the exact same stretch was recently closed to build Element and you didn't even notice.

It seems that keeping the block between Wisconsin Avenue and Commerce Lane would create a worse bottleneck. Drivers turning from Wisconsin Avenue or East-West Highway would zoom up that open lane for exactly one block, only to find themselves stuck at the closed lane.
