Transformer blows in downtown Bethesda, causing power outage for some (Photos)

An explosion heard in downtown Bethesda last night between 10:30 and 11:00 PM drew a police and fire response. Montgomery County police officers closed off the northbound lanes of Wisconsin Avenue at Cordell Avenue. After searching the area with lights, they eventually zeroed in on a transformer above Maple Beer & Wine at 8125 Wisconsin that had blown. Pepco customers in East Bethesda and parts of Chevy Chase reported power outages. Customers in the Woodmont Triangle saw their lights flicker, but they stayed on.
