Bethesda Metro escalator-to-stairs conversion running out of summer (Photos)

The plaza-to-bus-bays escalator at the Bethesda Metro station was scheduled to be replaced with a more-primitive staircase by the end of this summer. Summer is half-over, and here is a look at the progress since my last update in June. In a sign that construction of the new stairs may be ramping up this week, a new scaffolding has been erected at the top of the stairs. Summer doesn't end until September 22, so they've still got about 7 weeks to deliver a gleaming new staircase here, folks.

It will be interesting to see if they pull the weeds in the area immediately adjacent to the stairs, and steam clean the dirty retaining walls. My guess is no. Brookfield could do a much better job of maintaining this area.

Too bad the new white metal ceiling at the top of the Metro escalators doesn’t include some cool “Welcome to Bethesda” graphics. It would be great to see that as one rises up on the very long escalators. Maybe BUP can get a mural or some illuminated artwork on that ceiling.

WMATA owns those stairs and the untreated area with the weeds.

First, the METRO needs to complete the ceiling for the METRO level where the escalators arrive at the top. It’s still unfinished. Secondly, the real excitement is centered around a new set of Elevators they are just starting to build on the South Side of the Station. Now, that will really be something to look forward to !
