Bethesda Row Giant cutting back hours again
The great collapse of Bethesda's nighttime economy continues. At least three downtown Bethesda 24-hour grocery stores decided to begin closing at night over the last decade. One of them, the Giant at Bethesda Row, is now reducing operating hours even further. Instead of closing at midnight as it does now, the store will close at 11:00 PM, effective Sunday, February 26, 2023.
What time will Nike close? Maybe we could get a 7-11? That would be the progression.
ReplyDelete"For your convenience." It makes a nice supplement to their having almost no checkers on duty in the evening.
ReplyDeleteGiant at Democracy and Old George remains 24-hours, I believe.
TBH this is a pretty understandable adjustment. No one goes to the Grocery store late at night anymore.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to tell old folks for their own good that it's too dangerous to be buying groceries in the middle of the night around here. Nothing good happens in a dark parking lot in Bethesda. Who wants MoCo to pay for our LEO to sit up there all night? I'm guessing not Giant because MoCo will allow their officers to sell themseelvea as a cop and a car for the right price. I see them at Rockville Pike stores.
ReplyDelete@9:36 AM: "Nothing good happens in a dark parking lot in Bethesda."
ReplyDeleteHow did that become acceptable to you?
"Who wants MoCo to pay for our LEO to sit up there all night?"
Oh now you care about MoCo Taxes and how the County spends our money. I guess funding MoCo PD to prevent crime and ensure public safety is your breaking point for that. Unlike you, I support more police funding for more officers to ensure safety at all hours for everyone in the County.
"I'm guessing not Giant because MoCo will allow their officers to sell themseelvea as a cop and a car for the right price. I see them at Rockville Pike stores."
What is your point? What is it that you want?
They already start locking people out of the store 10 minutes before closing so I expect in reality closing will be 10:45 ..lol
ReplyDeleteThe Safeway on Bradley, which used to be open 24/7 pre-pandemic (except on Sundays, if I recall correctly), also recently changed their closing hours from midnight to 11 pm. I don't know how much of a difference an hour makes for most people. I work until late in the evening and often shop after 10 pm. I have appreciated stores being open later, so I'm disappointed to see another grocery store in the neighborhood cut back on their evening hours.
ReplyDelete@6:07 AM: You're correct. "Giant at Democracy and Old George remains 24-hours, I believe." The Bethesda Row store is super close to me (more convenient), but I do sometimes shop at the 24-hour Giant.
@ 1158 We are living in this century. Paying for more guns on the street to protect us has alwaays been a problem for me. I want businesses to pay their way and their employees. Hasn't that been a problem in MoCo for several years. Typical Democratic policy points.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you want? Tougher immigration. Lock up poor folks stealing forever. Build a wall.
" MoCo will allow their officers to sell themselves as a cop and a car for the right price."
ReplyDeleteI'd like this looked into because the car is the taxpayers, the liability is likely the taxpayers, the gas - taxpayers - and the money I think (not sure) goes directly into the officer's pocket. I'd like for my employer to allow me a $100k unit - like an excavator - to make money on the side without paying the overhead. Nice work if you can get it.
What was the other grocery store that used to be open 24 hours ? I get the Safeway on Bradley and the Giant in Bethesda. That's two (2). What was the other one ?
ReplyDelete4:41: Harris Teeter in September 2018.
ReplyDelete11PM is the same for Harris Teeter Bethesda, right across from my Apt Building.
ReplyDelete@1:56 PM: "Paying for more guns on the street to protect us has alwaays been a problem for me."
ReplyDeleteYour statement here is why I carry for self-defense. Because you vote for people who don't adequately fund and staff the MoCo Police Department.
"What do you want? Tougher immigration. Lock up poor folks stealing forever. Build a wall."
I want legal immigration. I don't want people to be poor or to steal. I do want a wall.
And get their inoculations, and get inspected for contraband and fentanyl. There are legal pathways you know.
DeleteI’m scared to go out at night in Bethesda after dark with all the visitors from DC carjacking and assaulting
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Bethesda
We would spend nights walking around Bethesda going to ice cream pizza store or late night runs to get milk at grocery
Not any more
I feel like we live in Detroit
Lock doors, all neighbors now have house alarms ..it’s very sad but emblematic of the “let criminals be free” mentality.
If Moco can't redeem Silver Spring (and Wheaton) how can we expect Bethesda to end up differently? What just create a new, safer, North Bethesda up in South Rockville? That's the solution! For a few years, maybe.
DeleteBetter for the workers.
