Montgomery County Executive vetoes County Council appointment of James Hedrick to Planning Board

James Hedrick

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich (D) has vetoed the appointment of Rockville resident James Hedrick to the County Planning Board. Elrich has not made the reasons for his disapproval of Hedrick public yet. The only public statement regarding the matter came in response to Elrich's move, a press release from County Council President Evan Glass (D).

“I am disappointed that County Executive Elrich disapproved James Hedrick’s appointment to the Montgomery County Planning Board," Glass wrote in his statement. "Mr. Hedrick received affirmative votes from a supermajority of councilmembers to become a Planning Board member on Feb. 28."

While Hedrick received a supermajority of eight votes from the eleven member Council that day, he will need at least one more if the Council is to override Elrich's veto and be appointed to the Board. Glass wrote that the Council will "discuss" the veto at its next meeting this coming Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

Hedrick was a candidate for the Rockville City Council in 2019. He currently serves as the chair of Rockville Housing Enterprises (his term expires June 1), and as the vice-president of Action Committee for Transit.

    This might be why:

"Montgomery County politicians claim they are committed to demonstrating their commitment to diversity and equity, yet they choose an unqualified, ideologically rigid white male for a Planning Board seat over an abundantly qualified Black woman universally beloved & respected."

Hedrick's CV looks pretty darn qualified to me, and nothing seems to indicate he's 'ideologically rigid,' but he is White. It's not enough that he's a liberal Democrat? What's going on here?

Whom are you quoting and what was the context? Seems kind of important.

Let's see what Elrich fabricates to support his veto.

Liberals are against meritocracy which is why standards are lowered everywhere they're in charge.

We all live here instead of West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, etc. etc. for a reason and it's not because "standards" in Red states are higher, unless you're talking about the quality of their meth.

Darn it, 9:58, you're right let's not even try to make it even better. Let's be happy with how it is! I bet you've never been a victim of crime.

You mean like fully democrat controlled cities like DC, Baltimore, NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago and virtually every urban hellscape in this country?

Elrich should practice what he preaches in the name of diversity and resign.

Only a true bigot goes into a room full of White people and sees a lack of diversity.

6:42, thanks! So it is about race, and not merit. Thanks for that clarification.

You think "DC, Baltimore, NYC, Philadelphia, Chicago" are bad places to live? While Red states and counties are good places to live? Well, you're in luck! Literally no one with $$ or economic mobility agrees so you can buy half the states of WVa and Kentucky for the cost of one condo building in NYC or DC. Go, please move and enjoy.

This is liberal defense of the skyrocketing crime rate akin to the rearrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic. The funny thing is everyone can see it but you.

It's not about affording more expensive homes, it's about reducing crime and quality of life, and freedom from fear, and quiet enjoyment.

Crime? This article has nothing to do with crime and anyone knows red states have way more crime than blue. Great arguments, Einstein.

4:37, it's obvious that you fail to grasp the fundamentals of 'cause and effect,' and that your emotions will keep you from accepting fact. Good luck, its of course ok for you to think the way you do, but your ilk makes finding solutions essentially impossible and your naivete costs others in bad policy.

Liberals like 4:37 have been getting their news from The View or Comedy Central for so long that basic reasoning skills are lost.

Blue cities controlled by Soros sponsored DA's in are the worst offenders but if they happen to be in a Red state, these leftists completely ignore who's in charge of those cities so forget facts that don't carry the narrative.

One might think that the exodus from your "safe" cities like NYC, Chicago etc to FL would clarify things for you but unfortunately you can't even admit there is a crime problem not to mention taking any responsibility for policies that got us here.

Au contraire, everything has to do with crime: all the urban planning is nothing if your police and courts are weak and vacillating. That's what is going on, if it's tainting our otherwise secure residential areas it's because we're weak in enforcement. What do you expect when there's no accountability?

My, my, my look at all the Red state wannabes coming out of the woodwork again, expressing their displeasure with the governing body they get. Absolutely nothing is preventing you, or your brethren from filling any of the positions you oppose, except maybe cowardice or laziness.

It would be laughable if not so sad as the level of ignorance to support the obvious causes of the current crime wave.

Even your demented leader Brandon just blamed the GOP for defunding the police and the border crisis. You really are two peas in a pod.

At the county level, red and purple counties are much less "watch your back!" then blue counties.
I'm talking NJ, PA, MD, WV, Ohio, Florida, CA it's consistent. Rabid leftist create and thrive on chaos.

Florida's crime rate is higher than New York's, you absolute genius.

It should be illegal for people this dopey to post comments. You think poor, economically decrepit, red counties have lower crime rates than wealthy, well-educated, blue counties? Seriously? Have you given this topic zero thought or research?

News flash: literally the worst neighborhoods of MoCo are still nicer than the best neighborhoods of Garrett, Allegheny, etc. The counties with the highest crime rate in all of Maryland? Dorchester and Worchester. Guess what their political leaning is? I'll wait while you educate yourself....

Living in a liberal bubble is probably necessary as facts are ugly things. Catch & release is a leftist platform staple while gaslighting that the ship is fine. Seriously, time to lay down the crack pipe and try journalistic rehab.
