Montgomery County government offers self-defense courses for women as violent crime wave persists

Violent crimes such as armed carjackings, assaults, and robberies continue to plague Montgomery County, in all areas and at all hours. Montgomery County announced today that it will be offering low-cost self-defense courses for women this month and next, classes that will include "training on risk, crime awareness and prevention. Participants will be given a 13-piece student folio with information on how to reduce the risk of exposure to violence and how to escape violence. Participants also will learn some physical aspects of self-defense."

The courses will cost $12, and will be offered through the Montgomery County Commission for Women. You must pre-register to participate, and classes will have to fill up with at least 10 participants to be held. Teenage girls aged 13-17 are welcome to register, but must be accompanied by an adult, the County said in its announcement. Register online now and choose your location; the classes will be held at Montgomery County public libraries. All locations are in the East County or Germantown area.

The Commission for Women will not offer a course for men, but advises that such a course is available. Men are directed to call 240-777-8300 for information about that separate class.

Beyond ridiculous. And it's sexist, too! Another worthless, knee jerk band aid to deflect responsibility. Now insult after injury. Elrich is an embarrassment. You 12 voters that put him 'over the top,' should be embarrassed too.

Courses like this have been offered for as long as I can remember. It has nothing to do with Elrich, obviously.

Ehrlich has everything to do with it! If we had a strong police force as before; this would not be happening.

Blaming Bob Ehrlich for MCPD's failings makes about as much sense as blaming Marc Elrich.

So while Elrich and the Council try banning legal concealed carry, their solution is to offer self defense against criminals who carry and use illegal firearms.

Didn't work out so well for the woman at the Wheaton Costco.

  6. How's that vote working out for you about now? Armed car jacking in peaceful and very nice Hillmead in Bethesda, broad daylight car jacking outside Wheaton Costco where many of us frequent, open air shooting gallery and drivebys in Silver Spring seemingly weekly, coupled with roads being destroyed across the area by bike lanes few if any use and the list goes on and on. Yeah, the black guy would have been worse. Uh-huh. All that equity and diversity talk is really Bull S isn't it? Sully Reardon, though black himself, never had a chance cause foolish people pull the same lever time and time again. Have an R next to your name and you're as good as gone. Well, I guess no one can expect different results then.

Move to Florida like I did. I don't even want to be buried in MoCo when I die. Anyone want to buy a plot at Gate of Heaven?

It'd very possible that the poster above who cited Ehrlich above really meant Elrich! I know that I too have to make a conscious effort to distinguish when typing.

Additionally, I would not be surprised that some percentage of voters, in both recent cycles may have actually thought they were voting for Ehrlich and 'pulled the lever' in error.

Even constant lessons in ''cause and effect" and "nature trumps nurture" have no effect on the wokelib mindset. Come on, Man just look around! I'm hoping we're getting to 'peak woke' but it's gonna be a long slog to fix all the damage now.

Hey MoCo: It's for "women only"? What is a woman?

@4:19 PM: All you have is snark. Marc Elrich and the all-democrat leadership control police funding and direct priorities without any Republican involvement whatsoever. You voted for it so congratulations and own it.

@6:18 PM: Reardon wasn't the right kind of equity/diversity you know. This is going to keep getting worse.

Even JFK would be vilified and run out on a rail if he were in entering politics now, that thought should scare even old blue dog democrats but they too keep doubling down on stupid too.

"Marc Elrich and the all-democrat leadership control police funding"

You mean the police funding that goes up every year? MoCo hates hiring cops, obviously, that's why they're offering $20K signing bonuses! #RepublicanLogic

11:44 AM: Maybe you can explain why MoCo has to offer a $20K Bonus to hire officers here? Go on, we're all listening....

Because there's a shortage of police officers and everyone's competing for the ones who haven't caused a multi-million dollar taxpayer settlement. Are you new to America or something?

"Maybe you can explain why MoCo has to offer a $20K Bonus to hire officers here?"

The same reason many PDs locally and nationally are offering bonuses. The same reason garbage men and bus drivers are getting signing bonuses. There's a labor shortage, genius.

  18. 12:28 - so great. I'm all ears myself. By the way, FL is offering 50 and many are taking advantage and moving

4:26 it's probably diminishing returns on trying to get you up to speed on 'cause and effect,' but dontcha think the "labor shortage" you cite as an excuse might just be caused by bad policy and possibly criminal enterprise revolving around manufactured CV hysteria, not to mention the likely hood that CV is manufactured itself? Regardless, do you think that the universal police morale issues shared by the 15, or so, democratic run high crime 'failed ' cities, might just make hiring and retention of competent police *in these Soros manipulated* districts even more difficult?

It's funny to watch your ilk use your own failures to mask other failure.

We sure have a lot to fix ahead of us. Some are now waking up to see how duped they have been. I just hope it's not too late.

4:19/4:26 Cannot seem to grasp the big picture in that liberal DA's have revolving wheel of justice for repeat offenders all while punishing and demoralizing entire police departments for the actions of a few. This isn't surprising from people that think "The View" is news.

Democrats never really take the big picture into account like Moore a few days ago is joining CA in banning new ICE by 2035 with no plans to improve the grid, (except with DEI). These people aren't qualified to be dog catcher.

@11:44 AM: You mean like this funding that went up?: https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022/06/10/county-police-launch-program-to-help-decrease-auto-thefts/

"Montgomery County Police Department’s auto theft unit was disbanded earlier this year because of FY 2021 budget cuts."

11:44 AM: Of course Montgomery County hates hiring cops. That's why the authorized size of the force is less than half the size it should be. Don't believe me? Read this Report by the County:
    https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council/Resources/Files/agenda/cm/2022/20220131/20220131_PS2.pdf

"The Committee has received regular updates on Police staffing and is well aware that while the Department’s staff has historically been lower than the average for similarly-sized jurisdictions, Montgomery County continued to have relatively low crime rates. After taking significant budget cuts during the great recession, Police staffing increased slowly over the past 10 years, from 1,159 authorized sworn positions in FY12 to a high of 1,306 in FY21."

    ............

"For FY22, MCPD has an authorized sworn complement of 1,281 officers. This number reflects 1.2 officers per 1,000 residents. It is significantly lower than the average 2.8 officers per capita reported for counties, and the 2.5 officers per capita reported for suburban areas. While per capita staffing is just one measure of police department strength, it is important to note that MCPD’s per capita staffing has remained about 1.2 for almost 20 years."

It's worth mentioning that the Department is currently about 10% below its authorized sworn complement of officers, so that ratio is even worse.

    Congratulations. You did it.
