The Corner Slice has permanently closed at 7901 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda. It had been dark for a couple of weeks, but sporadic closures have been as much a part of the pizzeria's M.O. as New York-style pizza by-the-slice in recent times. A reader bumped into an employee who informed him that The Corner Slice was no more. The closure was confirmed last night when an Out-of-Business sign was posted on the restaurant's door. It's a sad day for pizza lovers in Bethesda, even as they celebrate the arrival of highly-rated competitors like Andy's Pizza and AP Pizza Shop.

Corner Slice closes in Bethesda

Good riddance! Like almost out of a comedy sketch one time the guy there pulled a slice out if the oven for me with his hands (after handling money) wanted me to just take it out of his hands no box, plate, napkins, nothing. He said to me "the heat kills everything"! No joke! Adios!

ReplyDeleteI really liked their pizza. I did my own match up between their pizza and Andy's. I liked theirs better. The sauce was interesting. They had uneven counter help though.
Learning
My friend who grew up in Queens considered Corner Slice to be the best NY-style pizza in the area.
ReplyDeleteFinally. Worst place maybe in all of that part of Bethesda. No one mourns this loss even likely their owners. Absolutely awful food. It was never, ever busy so how in the world did they stay open this long?
ReplyDelete"A sad day"? Pleaze, that stuff was the worse thing to call pizza ever. I don't know how they managed to stay in business this long. When I was in college and later, it was the stuff you'd try after bar crawling, because nothing else was available cheap. You never saw a line, and hardly anyone was there at other times. Nothing lost, lots to gain.
ReplyDeleteOh God...pray another pizza shop takes over the space. Otherwise we'll have another smoke shop or tattoo parlor.
ReplyDeleteTouche'
DeleteEven Manny & Olga’s slices tasted better…
ReplyDeleteThey made a GREAT slice of pizza and will be missed. Not sure why didn’t have better and more consistent hours.
ReplyDeleteso many closures. corner slice lasted longer than many others. most new bethesda businesses are popups whether they realize it or not.
ReplyDeleteI like Pollo Campero better
ReplyDeleteAs a native to NJ, their pizza was always reminiscent of home. I mourn this loss and hope the owners do well in other endeavors. They had the best pizza in the DMV
ReplyDeleteTypical leftist bethesda snobbery. Some folks can't afford the $100 dinners you enjoy every evening. Happy for you to pay for my next slice though ;-P
ReplyDeleteAnyone know who owns the bldg?
ReplyDeleteHi JAC: I am the guy who didn't use the word 'hate' in that earlier post, remember me?
ReplyDeleteHere you are again trying to speak for all Bethesdians, I quote you exactly: "No one mourns this loss even likely their owners." No one? There again, you pretend to speak for everyone. I didn't bother keeping that other conversation going, but I will once again say you are a negative blowhard and you don't speak for everyone.
I still don't hate you, but I do think you are an obnoxious blowhard, and that's why you draw so much ire.
Methinks you might have other issues with JAC that you're unable to factually dispute. Additionally, you should be less sensitive to anyone's opinion: when one is postulatong they are, by definition, speaking for themselves. Lighten up, Francis. You're only speaking for your puny self.
DeleteFair point. I’ve just read a few posts today where he’s bashing everything.
DeleteChill out, JAC, and have a beer.
We lament our slow destruction and are frustrated by our neighbors' inability in seeing it and thwarting it. Most all of our legislative and administrative mistakes are, absolutely were, foreseeable. We knew all this was going to happen.

It was good pizza, the place wasn't run well from my personal experience. Getting a slice there felt like a drug deal, and the place wasn't well kept. As a former NY'er, italian food in general, and pizza specifically, in Bethesda is nowhere close to good. But, they did it pretty well. In my opinion, much better than the places that also do greek, indian, and whatever foods. Focus on one thing and do it well. Looking at you M&N, Olga's, etc.
ReplyDeleteAnd add to that nod, Andy's. What are y'all? A quick slice place? Too expensive and not really thaaaaat good. A wine bar, who wants kids and families rooting around behind you while at the 'bar?
DeleteWhat niche ?
Good NY/NJ slice. AP pizza is average. The fact you can't order but 12 inch pie at dinner and an 18 inch for lunch, they are dead to all NJ and NY transplants who know pizza. They don't. RIP corner slice!
ReplyDelete6:58 - Attack the message not the sender. Much better way to go. Don't like, move on.
ReplyDelete7:32 - Well stated. Lot of anger from that keyboard it would seem. I have strong opinions and call them like I see them. Don't like it, move along.
ReplyDeleteAlthough their sanitary discipline was challenged the pizza was very good, I lived in Manhattan and LI for years and know good pie.
ReplyDeleteNY transport here. That was solid NY pizza. It wouldn’t be the best but would surely keep itself busy in a NY neighborhood. I ate there often especially at lunch from the office . I will miss it dearly
ReplyDeleteGlad to have my opinion validated by NY ex-pats.
ReplyDelete@8:37 As a NYC ex-pat, we thank you for knowing good pizza. Maybe if there were more of you, there would be less bad pizza. You are an honorary paison, fuhgedaboudit.
ReplyDeleteLuigi's Pizzeria, Fort Greene, Brooklyn, CIN CIN!
The Corner Slice used to be fantastic New York pizza. It definitely slipped over the past five years or so, but still turned out good pies. I'm sad to see it go, and hate the fact that there doesn't seem to be any other good by-the-slice or New York style place nearby. I guess I'll have to check out Potomac Pizza.
ReplyDeleteProbably haven’t been in the last 4-5 years (kids older, new pizza places moved in) but always thought it was solid NY style pie and am sad to see to see it go
ReplyDeleteI loved the big slice of pizza there. I looked forward to grabbing one whenever I went to Bethesda for an appointment or whatever. The crust was crunchy and cheese melty, the veggies were crunchy and on top ( not all chopped and smuched into the cheese. No it was not the best looking place and the guys working there were kinda iffy, but I liked that you could get one or two slices for lunch and not have to buy a whole pie.
