Lidl "coming soon" signage being installed in Bethesda

Coming soon: a sign that says "coming soon" on the future storefront of Lidl at 7625 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. Workers are installing the individual panels of the sign this afternoon, using a rendering of the completed signage as a guide. This is the vacant Safeway space in the Bethesda Place apartments. That former anchor tenant closed a whopping six years ago, and will now be replaced by the rapidly-expanding German grocery chain.

  1. We need some check cashing and title loan shops here. It's not fair that our downtown residents have to trek to Silver Spring and PG County for these services. + a Jewish Deli and Irish Pub would be nice too.

    1. 11:03 - Great post. I would add pot shops to that list.

A few Hookah lounges would be good to get some SS traffic over here. We do have a Nike store which SS doesn't have.

hn and other snobby boomers are going to be shocked when this place does well. Being high income =/= wanting to flush money on Whole Paycheck every week. Plenty of us "new money" Bethesdians are financially successful BECAUSE we know the value of a dollar.

  3. We've had several short-lived Jewish delis, and at least one Irish pub that was around for a good while before Covid killed it.

With Westat announcing a few days ago that they are moving their headquarters to Bethesda next year, we should see an increase in activity. Westat is moving into the BF Saul Towers across from the Metro station. They have around 1900 employees.

I've heard great things about their wacky middle aisle!

@116: You're thinking of the Adli Finds "Aisle of Shame" not Lidl.

@516am: We have Avenue Cafe already, but we could use a couple more in Bethesda Row and Wildwood.

Also, some dispensaries would be great. Maybe one could move into the old Terrain Cafe or Paul space that's vacant.

9:04, do you mean cannabis dispensaries? We already have two or three. Even more on our fringes.

Why is it seemingly proven that more dispensaries = more crime? Drive further away for your pot and keep Bethesda safe. We don’t need that here.
