More data collection devices popping up in downtown Bethesda

These traffic data collection devices that first appeared on Woodmont Avenue, near the Bethesda Metro Center, are now popping up in the Woodmont Triangle. Here is more equipment that has just been installed near the intersection of Woodmont and Cordell Avenue. Exactly what type of data is being collected, and for what purpose, is so far unclear.

I do know there is a traffic study being done at the intersection of Edgemoor Lane and Woodmont. A request has been submitted to change the left lane of Edgemoor turning down woodmont to a left turn signal only due to the significant number of close calls when drivers fail to obey the left turn only lane rules.

It would be interesting to study the number of bicyclists that continue to ride in traffic or the sidewalk instead of the special protected lanes constructed for them.

Cyclists will ride where it is safest and most convenient - build good bike infrastructure that gets people where they need to go and it will be well used.
