Who is artifying the utility boxes of Bethesda? (Photos)

Utility boxes in downtown Bethesda have begun taking on a new appearance over the last few days. It started near the TD Bank at the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Woodmont Avenue, with bright flowers and polka dots. Like a contagion, it began to spread further through the Central Business District. More flowers, and even some scary bees. Finally, the people responsible were caught in the act: CSI, a printing company whose output includes graphic wraps for vehicles...and utility boxes.

This was an art project funded by BUP, not unlike the murals on parking garages. BUP sent out invitations for artists to submit ideas to help improve the public realm by creating artful ideas. Remember, Bethesda is where the arts shine!

It was not funded by BUP.

  7. With all the wacky things going in Bethesda, and there are many, this is a very refreshing and positive one. These boxes are bright, fun and well painted. Great idea to jazz up the place with some color in more ways than one.

Thank for the story Robert. The project was coordinated by the Bethesda Arts and Entertainment Board. It was paid for by various community sponsors. The artists are all local and in a couple of cases, they are high school students. The work is a decal (not paint) that holds up to the weather. -Peter Fosselman

Yessir, I like it. I like it a lot. Maybe they could shrink wrap the cop cars while they're at it...
