Bethesda man dies after being punched outside bar, alleged assailant arrested

A Silver Spring man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, after a man he allegedly punched outside of a bar in Bethesda later died from his injuries. Montgomery County police say Darrel David Nixon, 31, became involved in a dispute outside of La Catrina Bar & Lounge at 4935 Cordell Avenue early in the morning of February 15, 2025. Surveillance camera footage reviewed by detectives shows Nixon arguing with Morgan Andrew Hippchen Stone, 44, of Bethesda. At one point in the dispute, police allege, Nixon punched Hippchen Stone, who lost consciousness and fell to the ground.

Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services personnel arrived at the scene at 2:37 AM, and found Hippchen Stone laying in the street, unconscious and unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital, where he tragically died from his injuries almost a month later, on March 9. On April 22, the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, caused by blunt force head injuries.

Starting with the surveillance video, detectives developed their investigation, and ultimately identified Nixon as their suspect. He was arrested Tuesday, and was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

So someone gets arrested for manslaughter and is released on a 10K unsecured bond? This at an establishment now charged with manipulating their alcohol? Nice. Can't wait for the PL.

Too easy on this to complain about bond/bail, too many things could have happened. I'm saving my outrage for the violent 'malice a forethought' specific crimes we (will) see.

This reflects more on the establishment, especially if there are other incidents, even 'minor.'

Yeah, the shootings on Wesbard were minor as well. No outrage necessary as we should all get used to it.

The does seem a sort of undercurrent that we need to accept more crime here because so many other jurisdictions experience more crime than we do. Amazing really, it's going to be a hot summer, we may have interesting times!! We get what we allow.

The drawing on their sign is quite creepy.

It is, similarly to that of Jack the Clipper "barber" next door to Cornucopia.

Ok, taking bets on how long until La Catrina closes.

They are drawing the wrong crowd -- there was also a stabbing there on 1/26/24. The place has a rather strict security guy (only place you'll get a pat-down in Bethesda!), but they can only do so much if the clientele is there to make trouble.

Add in the liquor license violation for refilling bottles -- you've got to be desperate considering the huge margins on alcohol -- and this is not a good sign.

But.. who would be willing to take over such a large space?
