Maryland has 2nd-worst economy in America, CNBC finds

Maryland has the second-worst economy in the U.S., CNBC found in its 2026 Worst State Economies in America survey, the results of which were released today. "Economic growth and job growth nearly flatlined in Maryland over the past year," the cable TV business channel noted in its analysis. "[H]igh costs, unpredictable taxes, and growing regulatory burdens," are each a drag on the state's economy, as is an over-reliance on government jobs and federal funds. A new IT services tax walloped businesses, sending many firms packing for greener pastures in other states. Especially hard hit by the IT tax were government contractors, a painful irony in a state where little beyond government has been growing this century.

Some factors in CNBC's criteria certainly hit Maryland where it hurts. These included job growth, economic growth, and the number of major companies headquartered in the state. The first two "flatlined" over the last 12 months, in CNBC's own word, and Maryland hasn't attracted a single new major corporate headquarters this century. In fact, the story has been the number of companies leaving the state. "Budget situation" isn't a category any Maryland elected official would want to delve into publicly. Debt? Maryland and Montgomery County are both in deadly serious trouble on that front, as well.

"Small business survival rates?" Ho ho. The ubiquitous "Going Out of Business" and "Everything must go!!!" signs in Montgomery County storefront windows tell a most tragic story indeed.

"Maryland finds itself in a deep hole in 2026, with no easy way out of it," CNBC concluded. But the picture is even bleaker than the one painted by the already-stinging rebuke of a friendly, liberal news outlet. They didn't even mention the budget apocalypse currently forecast for the state in 2030.

Can we continue to whistle past the graveyard, raising taxes and instituting new ones? Refusing for radical ideological reasons to construct the long-delayed new Potomac River crossing to the Dulles area? Continuing to block completion of our master plan highway system? Keep on losing, and often hardly trying, in the corporate HQ relocation sweepstakes?

We could. And we just might end up topping CNBC's worst list in the future. It's one of the few things within easy reach for the buffoonish incompetents currently running Montgomery County and Maryland. After all, "We're number two - we try harder."

Not great timing for our physically fit but fiscally (and character) challenged Obama prime to enter the WH Residential Race. He's just got more 'splainin' to do.. He is pretty good in the talking phase, not so much at the doin' part.

This should crush Moore's Presidential aspirations, but it won't, and that's the problem.

Anonymous said...

This is all because these progressives in charge believe their policies operate in a vacuum. Much like the $15/hr minimum wage, their "surprised" when it doesn't have the intended results so they move on the the next thing all while patting themselves on the back saying "it will work next time".

In the real world, results matter.

The only effective remedy would be for the voters to elect Republicans to run things but that will never happen there. Especially in MoCo where that Dem ideology is so deeply embedded. Plus they hate “you know who” so much they would rather self-destruct than admit he is right.

Anonymous said...

Also per the article: “In just the last year, the federal government has fired around 25,000 Marylanders who have federal jobs in our state alone,” said Moore, a Democrat. “It’s the biggest federal job cut of any state in the country.”

JAC said...

A race to the bottom, who's with me, Wes? Let's go.

Fair points. Other analyses mentioned DOGE cuts as well.

“In just the last year, the federal government has fired around 25,000 Marylanders who have federal jobs in our state alone,” said Moore, a Democrat. “It’s the biggest federal job cut of any state in the country.”

This was of course caused primarily by a Republican president.

Anonymous said...

Duh. The past 18 months have been atrocious for the state (and region, and country, and much of the world). We still have another 30 months to go and then however long the recovery period takes this time around.

Anonymous said...

@7:09 Ask Moore about his Bronze Star. Truth and the left are strange bedfellows.

Anonymous said...

Oh jeez, I wonder what happened this past year to tank our ranking by 20+ spots. It's such a mystery! Surely it's the IT services tax and not losing tens of thousands of jobs! *eyeroll*

Momo said...

The “recovery period”? You mean the disaster that was the Biden administration?

Robert Dyer said...

5:39: The feds fired 23,500 Virginians - but Virginia didn't make this list. Looks like DOGE can't be blamed for this one.

A said...

Once again, Robert conveniently leaves out the parts that don't fit his kooky narrative.

"Economic growth and job growth nearly flatlined in Maryland over the past year. The Old Line State’s deep connection with the federal government next door has a lot to do with that, as Gov. Wes Moore pointed out in his State of the State address in February.
“In just the last year, the federal government has fired around 25,000 Marylanders who have federal jobs in our state alone,” said Moore, a Democrat. “It’s the biggest federal job cut of any state in the country.” "

And -

Share of state spending from federal funds: 31.2%

So thank your boy in office for firing tens of thousands of taxpayers and pulling funding to the state because his dewicate wittwe feefees are hurt.

Robert Dyer said...

A at 12:53: Wes Moore is gaslighting you there, as 23,500 federal employees who live in Virginia were also fired, yet Virginia's economy is booming and they are nowhere near being listed with Maryland as one of the Worst Economies in America. Clearly the fed factor was minimal compared with our obvious and well known weaknesses.

Wait what? I just walked by there yesterday and swear it looked like someone walked into Nike?

I'm a small business owner in MD, in the IT industry. This ranking is well-deserved. The digital services tax means we cost 3% more than bids from Virginia, and also our costs went up because digital services we use (Google Workspace, etc) are now 3% higher due to taxes. In our industry, we use a lot of digital services every month.

But on a broader perspective, think of it this way: what legislation has been passed in MD at the state or county level that actually _help_ business? Everything that seems to get passed adds more rules and regulations, and nothing makes it easier.

Momo said...

What if those 25,000 weren’t providing good value for the taxpayer’s money and the country can run just as well without them?

Anonymous said...

Wes says it, I believe it. NOT!

Anonymous said...

@A, “they’re” is a contraction of “they are”, “their” shows possession. @4:34 is using the correct word.

We moved our operations out of MD last year as the numbers don't make sense. Now we're in the process of selling the hard pieces, (commercial and residential properties), but the current selling climate is weak. We may end up losing on this end while making it up from the operations end which is significantly more profitable in a right to work state.

Anonymous said...

Robert, please tell those 25,000 Marylanders who were fired that their loses were only “minimal”.

Not sure I would trust Republicans per se - any fiscal conservative would work. But those types can't get elected - because they don't promise the free stuff to the electorate with hands outstretched. This is not going to end well for MoCO - I predict they will hit the Ag Reserve looking for more revenue - developers and Data Centers. That's the last card they have to play.

Anonymous said...

The 'cause' may have been the bloat of government foisted on us mainly by Democrats over the years. The lack of private sector growth in MD is due to Annapolis and MoCo 'leadership'. Plenty of blame to go around. What shall we do going forward? Repeat past mistakes?

A said...

@5:46 Wes Moore has nothing to do with the administration firing 25,000 federal employees without cause and the administration targeting blue states with deep funding cuts (millions alone for education grants - so much that MCPS has to lay off pretty much all of their social service personnel who work with at-risk students). Virginia has a larger number of federal employees and a lower share percentage of state spending from federal funds.

@7:41 as we can see by everything happening around the country, that is false. The VA's services for disabled veterans has been gutted, the FBI doesn't have enough people to pursue its cases, the Department of Defense agencies are understaffed, cuts to environmental and food safety programs/agencies are directly responsible for the screwworm and Cyclosporiasis outbreaks sweeping through the states, cuts to financial agencies have diminished their ability to prosecute financial crimes and tax fraud, cuts to the Department of Education have directly harmed the education system and the children enrolled in it, cuts to science programs has stunted our scientific excellence, cuts to USAID have destroyed our global soft power, cuts to the Nuclear Monitoring System has endangered all of us, cuts to the TSA and FAA have resulted in tons of flight delays and huge airport lines, cuts to NASA and DoD agencies have essentially guaranteed that China will surpass us as the leader in space - I could go on. The cuts were so excessive that the government is undergoing a massive hiring blitz right now to try to get people back.

@7:03 a blatant lie, but that's to be expected from one of Trump's Deranged Supporters in his Epstein cult. The actual exchange between Jean Carroll and Anderson Cooper was -

CARROLL: Sexual violence is in every country in every strata of society, and I just feel that so many women are undergoing sexual violence. Mine was short. I got out. I'm happy now. I'm moving on.

And I think of all the women who are enduring constant sexual violence. So, this one incident, this one, what, three minutes in this little dressing room, I just say it's a fight. That way I'm not the victim, right? I'm not the victim.

COOPER: You don't feel like a victim.

CARROLL: I was not thrown on the ground and ravished. Which the word "rape" carries so many sexual connotations. This was not -- this was not sexual. It just hurt. It just --

COOPER: I think most people think of rape as a -- it is a violent assault. It is not --

CARROLL: I think most people think of rape as being sexy.

COOPER: Let's take a short break --

CARROLL: They think of the fantasies.

COOPER: We're going to take a quick break. If you can stick around we'll talk more on the other side.

This is directly from the transcript of that interview. https://web.archive.org/web/20230219213836/http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1906/24/acd.01.html
She was saying that the word rape has sexual connotations, and her assault was not sexual in nature - it was more of a violent attack, so she doesn't believe that the word rape correctly describes it.

Sad that morons on the left think they can just bypass the laws they disagree with. You failed civics as well as your country.

The typical liberal, 6:46, not only can't admit their ignorance of a documented specific crime but tries to pivot when confronted by receipts. Protecting a convicted child rapist by lying, saying it's made up and trying to project that on Trump demonstrates how broken you really are. I actually feel sorry that there are people like you that think it's ok to sacrifice citizens to further your political fantasies.

Here in the real world, facts show that immigrants commit less crime than US-born citizens. Posting a twitter link to a one-off crime does not negate that fact. Coping about it does not negate that fact. Crying about it on a blog does not negate that fact. You can try all you like, but there is nothing you can do to negate that fact. The reality is that you live in fear of anyone who does not look like you, and you try to cover it up with lies about immigrants - going so far as to support convicted rapists because they give you permission to hate those that do not look like you. You're not fooling anyone.

11:42 who is a pedophile apologist liar that won't answer why they don't think that an illegal who was convicted of raping a 12-year old is a real story and posts several liberal websites to justify these predators when the real answer is: NONE of it would have happened if we had secure borders. The NIJ is a joke and you might as well post NPR. The other two sources are liberal advocacy groups. Such a fail but I guess the NYT is now a conservative rag because they had to report the facts on your protected class illegal. The problem with liberal statistics is actually the crime per 1000 of THEIR population, not diluting it with the general population. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts so that cherry picking BS might help you sleep at night but doesn't help the victims, but what do you care.

Look at the actual receipts:

They are very similar to the Wizard of OZ, little people with a boisterous facade.

Not to worry MoCo is a sanctuary county for sexual predators and pedophiles.

8:40 is just so much worse than we think they are. Refusing to acknowledge the rape of a child because they want illegals to roam free without the impediment of laws. Are you even a citizen?

@8:38 funny having you trying to project your pedophile shielding words with obvious lies.

Conveniently ignoring how I said above that the criminal who raped the child should receive the death penalty, but that is par for the course for conservatives - ignore what's right in front of you so you can invent a fictional scenario to be upset about. Since we're on the topic of assault -

@12:09 Since the NYT posted this:

7:09 is working against citizens which I would bet Momo doesn't. Strength is not through diversity but assimilation.

Another lie 7:09 posited was the criminal vs civil talking point. If you cross illegally, it's criminal period. Overstaying a visa may be civil but can also be criminal. You throw around words like you understand them but obviously not.

Identity politics is your religion, not mine. I see you keep repeating the falsehood that DT is a convicted rapist. It’s emblematic of your obsessive mindset that reality can’t penetrate. So prove it, let us see your evidence that Trump is a convicted rapist.

"turning a blind eye to a rapist of a 12-year old" again, you're making things up to cope. Take this L."

When it comes to abuse of a child, one would think it would be an easy one to agree on but you have trouble believing illegals can possibly be guilty AND YET, when Walz pardoned him, it's all fake news to you and let's post fake ot-of-contex advocacy links to support the very people preying on citizens. You're just a disgusting person and many of us will be here to point that out.

It's quite interesting to look at how the conservatives on this post are looking at the immigrant rapist compared to the convicted rapist Donald Trump.

Fo the immigrant, they are demanding punishment.

For Trump, they are demanding forgiveness, and in the case of Momo here, downplaying the severity of rape simply because he's their guy.

Quite interesting look into the conservative psyche. They demand forgiveness for the guy with an (R) next to his name but demand punishment for anyone else. Of course none of the other commenters are calling Momo out for defending the indefensible.

Folks, can you try to steer the debate back to the topic, such as the impact of Trump's or Wes Moore's actions related to the Maryland economy? I'm trying to allow as wide a berth for open discussion here as possible, but you're going around in circles insulting each other on off-topic issues, and it's not adding any value for readers. Let's get back on topic and try to tone down the personal insults.

Anonymous said...

Since 5:50 loves attributing intentions on others, your actual words have decried the rape of a child and pardon of the illegal in MN as "a made up scenario". Defending the indefensible is what the left does so well.

Momo said...

Still no actual facts or evidence that DT raped anyone (the “sexual assault” was a bogus “trumped up” conviction) and no one with a brain takes it seriously. But Trump’s greatness lies in his intestinal fortitude to stand up to the leftists, “progressives” and commies in this country (like A) and give them all a big middle finger. Dems have been importing millions of third-worlders as future voters because there are insufficient numbers of non-immigrant Americans willing to vote for their depraved policies. That’s how Mamdani got elected. I could go on but diversity is most definitely not our strength. These people want to destroy this country. If you think anyone gives a dam anymore when you all play the race card you are quite mistaken. Wokeness is not gone but has been kicked to the curb by Trump, which is why he was elected POTUS twice. Gonna be Vance or Rubio next.

Momo said...

You are correct as usual Robt. It is really futile to try and have a rational argument with some people who are so obsessed with their issues.

Just reading Elrich grieving for Illegals targeted by ICE whith no mention of the victims like MD resident Rachel Morin which is relevant and I think highlights the suicidal empathy that some leftist residents here have been afflicted with in that their support for the insane economic policies are tied with their political activism.

A byproduct of the thread actually lured out one poster who defined themselves as ignorant to news they don't want to see and pivot that towards anything else. In doing so, they went further by having to defend indefensible positions that most people can see as a black and white issue which was the pardon of a child rapist. A sad corollary to what some people will do to protect their political allies.
