Assault at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Montgomery County police responded to a report of a 2nd-degree assault at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda on the evening of October 14, 2026. The assault was reported at 8:31 PM. It was related to a shoplifting incident at one of the stores in the mall.

The assault is the first to be reported at the retail center since Westfield instituted a 3:00 PM juvenile curfew on September 28. It is the eighth assault reported at the mall this year. Twelve assaults were recorded at the property in 2025.

Maybe, just Maybe McCarthy should start enforcing existing laws and actually prosecute these criminals. Just a dream.

Save your outrage for the bigger incidents to come. These are just noise on the chart.

Fake News! You're making the assumption that the perp in this so called assault was a juvenile, when more than likely it was an adult. The use of that nebulose word 'assault' is deceptively misleading.

10:29: Nowhere did I assert the suspect was a juvenile. I noted the curfew was in effect, which - if anything - could lead one to assume the suspect was an adult. But neither assumption was made, nor stated, in this report.

A pipe dream mind you since he abhors mundane tasks.

It’s not McCarthy. He does what he can. It’s the legislators in Annapolis that enact laws that impede prosecution for juveniles.

Exactly, it takes a high profile incident to overcome the inertia of complacency.

I know many area teenagers whose parents need to now drive them to Tyson's instead of nearby Montgomery Mall. Thanks Jack McCarthy.

As the prosecutor in MC, he has discretion to charge using existing statutes. The fact that he's essentially acting like the judge/jury by non-prosecution is why we are where we are. If the feds proposal to remove qualified immunity from local AG's is successful, we'll see a change when victims can sue because they released criminals that should have been prosecuted.

He also has the discretion to coast along the next four years into retirement.

@ 4:18 PM It is both!
The laws are written intentionally in broad, flexible language that essentially creates two opposing realities. So, the prosecutors take the path of least effort.

Most us Boomers would be too independent and embarrassed to have our parents do that. Very sad.

It seems that he is bashed from both sides. Thus, his inertia is understandable.

@6:42 Repeating a lie doesn't make it true.

@6:42 PM: Stop making racist assumptions.

6:42, you have a point, tho my first thought was our own home grown local types, but you're right, the PL would create new opportunities from the east. Thanks!!
