Tesla couldn't let Rivian steal all the EV news headlines in Bethesda this week. One of their new Cybercab Robotaxis was spotted outside of &pizza in downtown Bethesda at lunchtime today. Because Montgomery County leaders are stuck in the 1960s, such autonomous taxis are not yet allowed to operate here yet. But they have been sighted on County roads in recent weeks, as Tesla conducts testing and gathers data. Cybercabs are currently only allowed to legally operate in Austin, Texas.

In broad daylight, too!!
That's funny. I literally saw that thing last night. I thought it was just a fancy version of the Tesla car. Yeah, I don't know about driverless taxies. Have you seen the Waymo crashes? All that being said, Elon Musk is a true visionary and a stone cold genius. Did you see the launch of the Tesla Roadster? That is the coolest vehicle I've ever seen. It can hover and will eventually fly and does 0-60 in 1 second. Incredible.
I better dust off the cameras and fire up the scanner, so I’m ready when the calls start coming in for these things crashing into houses and pedestrians.
You wrote - "Because Montgomery County leaders are stuck in the 1960s, such autonomous taxis are not yet allowed to operate here yet." Followed by "Cybercabs are currently only allowed to legally operate in Austin, Texas." Ergo, all municipal leaders are stuck in the 1960s. Do I have that correct?
A much classier way for muggers to arrive and depart downtown Bethesda, compared to the Purple Line.
Maybe one day Tesla's Roadsters and (if approved) Cybercabs will be cruising the streets of Bethesda for real, but unencrypted Montgomery County Police transmissions are never coming back.
You'll just have to rely on your spidey sense.
But lose any hope of anonymity and leave a trail, they've already noodled that out. What they need is a sort of mass transit that is more easy to access, use, remain somewhat indescribable, and easily overwhelm in even small numbers.
Absolutely incredible. I've never seen so many useless things crammed together into one product. And it is only a decade (and counting) delayed! True genius!
Can we expect pilotless airplanes soon?
LMAO !
Purple Line trains will all have security cameras onboard and at the stations, with time stamps, trip origins and destinations recorded. A perp using the Purp to do their dastardly deeds will be very easy to apprehend. I don’t think riding the PL with a ski mask on will be a thing.
11:10 ;how's all that working out today? Do you work for WMATA perchance?
Nope. Just trying to dispel frequent nimby fear-mongering.
2:12 - The Purple Line is a MTA project not WMATA. But of course you should have known that.
Ah yes, a car that will only interest boys, I mean men, who spend their lives playing video games in their parents' basements, and lack the disposable income to buy. True genius!
4:52 Boo Hoo! Whiner.
2:12 - Logic is lost on the bumbling minds of B-town. But thant you for your reasoning.
@JAC neat tech, but that thruster technology was tested on the Lockheed Martin Multiple Kill Vehicle back in 1999. It was a cool marketing stunt but it won’t be available for consumers.
Wahhhh purple line wahhhhhhh
@2:25 yeah I’d rather not one of Elon’s crappy vehicles splatter my dog and I while crossing the street, thanks.
A - 6:36 - That's what inventors do, thru try until they succeed. It was very Back to the Future looking that's for sure.
Does anyone really believe MTA is geared up for this? Or can they ever be? Already Metro yes wmata, is overwhelmed like monkeys trying a moon launch. Bodes poorly for the future.
@6:40 PM: You and your dog are infinitely more likely to be splattered by an illegal immigrant with no insurance, no headlights and no tail lights, but go off king.
@6:38 PM: Stop making racist assumptions.
LOL. Musk is a genius at fleecing the rubes, and that's about it. First he started talking about colonizing Mars, then had to downgrade to the Moon. He promised that the Hyperloop would revolutionize rapid transit, but it turned out that "The Boring Company" was a more apt name than he was letting on. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for his autonomous taxi service to start operations. He's only really good at demonizing immigrants and blowing up taxpayer-funded rockets.
