SHA installs No Standing signs at Bradley Blvd. crosswalks (Photos)

A number of readers have continued to express concerns about the safety at marked crosswalks on Bradley Boulevard between Arlington Road and Wisconsin Avenue. The latest safety addition by the Maryland State Highway Administration are "No standing any time" signs that forbid vehicles from sitting close to the crosswalk.

This should partially address the issue of people parking right up at the crosswalks, where their vehicles were blocking drivers' view of pedestrians entering the crosswalks. I'm not sure why the signs say "standing" instead of "parking," but maybe those in the know about crosswalk safety engineering can weigh in on that in the comments below.

  1. Robert, speaking of, can you help address the situation on Woodmont Avenue. I get street closures for development, but it seems both sides between Wisconsin and Battery for construction of 8300 Flats and Stonehall they are really just using it for parking. The entire side of 8300 Flats is just parked construction worker cars. The Stonehall side had two lanes blocked off at one point. Mostly for cars, with some construction equipment. How is this allowed?!?

    I'm the one who reported this to SHA about 6 months ago. The traffic engineer wrote back to my request (after a few months) and said the signs will be No Standing because that means not only can't you park there, you also can't stop a car there at all (like for a drop-off).

    Next one on my list: I heard back from MoCo traffic engineering and they will be doing a traffic study on the Woodmont / Bethesda Ave intersection. My proposal was that they have one light cycle where all crosswalks are "green" (and all traffic lights red) and add in a diagonal crosswalk also. So there would be one cycle for pedestrians only.

    1. I thought the realignment was supposed to make the roads better. It really seems now it was just to make the buildings better

  3. Woodmont / Bethesda Ave intersection is insane: for pedestrians and drivers.
    The intersection doesn't even line up properly.

    Glad that Robert Dyer is highlighting pedestrian safety issues in our downtown!

    @8:12 That's why I proposed they do a light cycle with pedestrians only. That weird angles of the intersection mean people make a right from Woodmont to Bethesda Ave, but the crosswalk isn't easily visble when doing so.

    "No Standing" is "No Parking" plus also no temporarily waiting in your car, e.g. sitting there to pick up a friend. I'd certainly hope anyone with a drivers liscense knows this very common distinction.

    Probably went to No Standing to stop the excuses. Those who "aren't parking, just picking somebody up"
