Q by Peter Chang to open in May in Bethesda

A quick update on the eagerly-awaited Q by Peter Chang since my report on Monday - the restaurant has announced it will open next month at 4500 East-West Highway. They are interviewing for all positions this week.

I will avoid this place at lunchtime as it will be swarmed by hordes of BCC students.

I don't think BCC kids will be interested in this. This is a sit down restaurant that will take longer than high school kids have to wait for lunch. All other Chinese places better watch out. Peter Chang is no one to need with food wise

This is old news. This restaurant will give the kids something to aim for in life. McDonalds had cheap food and provided jobs perhaps, but this place provides jobs too and more, thanks to all the office space.

This is great, a +1 for Bethesda Nightlife!

    ReplyDelete
  8. 8:34: It's great, but it's a restaurant, not a nightclub. 10 Bethesda bars/nightclubs have closed after Hans Riemer's failed "nighttime economy" initiative.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Anonymous9:05 AM

How many failed before his initiative?

    ReplyDelete
  10. 9:05: How many failed before 1950? Who cares? It's the ones that closed after Riemer that matter, as he touted that he was going to save and improve the nighttime economy. Instead, it imploded in downtown Bethesda. Lots of quiet streets after 9-10 PM. Embarrassing.

the nighttime economy is affected by so many factors!!!! so many of the owners of these businesses are not well-suited to the business. Stop putting it all on stupid Hans. Get smart Robert. When Arnie fainman is in charge, of course the business will fail. Other bars and clubs also failed because of crappy ownership and management. It's not because of the council.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 9:11: Sure, one or two might not know what they're doing. Unfortunately, 10 closed in this case. Massive loss. Quiet streets. Low energy nightlife, almost as low-energy as Hans Riemer. SAD!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous9:28 AM

Robert, do you ever stop to think maybe people here aren't interested in night life? Most of the DC clubs are patronized by college students. College kids in MoCo like to drink coffee, play video games, and smoke hookahs!

People here aren't into night life as much as you think. They want to eat healthy, see movies, and exercise and drink coffee. they wake up early, go to work, and pay taxes. Drinking shots of sex on the beach and waiting in line to see women in tight dresses isn't their thing. That's not Hans' fault either.

    ReplyDelete

There are better ways to meet interesting people and make new friends, than spending $5, $10 or even more per drink and winding up in a drunken stupor at 2 AM.

    Don't be snotty. I didn't ask about before 1950.

    *I* Care. That's why I asked.

What if 20 had closed in the same amount of time *before* Riemer's initiative? Then 10 would be an improvement.

And how did NoVa, DC, or other areas do in comparison during this timeframe? As Dyer often likes to compare when it suits his purposes.

If Dyer is such a genius about "night spots", and that he believes that they are so critical to our economy, then why doesn't he open one?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous1:35 PM

1:31: Dyer thinks Bethesda should have "clubs" like they do in Vegas, or NYC complete with the roped off entrance and forcing people to wait out in line on the street. It's pretty clear to me Dyer's frame of reference is from "A Night at the Roxbury" rather than any real knowledge of what would actually work in Bethesda.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous9:16 PM

Dyer, you fool. It's not just Bethesda and Hans Riemer's War On The Night. Clubbing is passé, not just in Bethesda, not just in the United States, but worldwide.

Dyer @ some godawful hour in the morning:

So how do you explain this?

"The U.S. nightlife industry is suffering. Over 10,000 bars have shut down in the past decade—with closures reaching a peak of six per day in 2014."

    ReplyDelete
  20. 4:09: That wasn't a "godawful hour," but does your mom make you go to bed at 8 PM? God, what a loser.

Vegas, South Beach, LA, NYC all seem to be doing well. I would imagine most of the bars closing are in what you and George Leventhal would consider "flyover country," as your buddy Hans Riemer's outsourcing sugar daddies Mitch Rales and Mitt Romney have continued to ship American jobs overseas and to Mexico. So both the national and MoCo trends can be blamed on Riemer in that respect. But he definitely owns the 10 downtown Bethesda closures on his watch, a powerful net loss, as he tried to be the face of the "nighttime economy." Clown move!

  21. G. Money5:20 AM

Dyer, I'll ask again, when was the last time you went to a "Vegas-style" nightclub?

By the way, there are plenty of clubs in the area, but they're either located in areas with large warehouses and cheap rents, or centrally with respect to population and transit. Downtown Bethesda fits neither bill.

    ReplyDelete
  22. In Vegas, for example, many of the top nightspots are in hotels. I had hoped the Council and Planning Board would have tried to extract an upscale nightclub as a concession for any new downtown Bethesda hotel of sufficient size. No dice. They're just too low-energy. Super low energy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anonymous5:59 AM

Dyer, the Double Tree in Bethesda tired that and it failed miserably, just like both your runs for County Council.

You need to think about an areas demographic when assessing what will and will not work for "nightlife" You can't just emulate what you watch on "Shah's of Sunset"

    ReplyDelete
  24. G. Money6:43 AM

Oh for god's sake Dyer, those clubs are in tightly clustered hotels that are also casinos, which happen to be an international travel destination for people looking to party.

I'll take your answer to mean that you have never been to one of those clubs. That makes sense, because those clubs would not fit at all in Bethesda.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 5:59: The DoubleTree never had a real, Vegas-style nightclub.

I didn't legitimately lose either election. The media blacked me out, didn't investigate Hans Riemer's scandals, and the cemetery precincts came in strong for Riemer.

A combination of removing illegal voters from the rolls, and having poll watchers monitor polling places for illegal voters, should allow for a free and fair election in 2018.

What is "Shahs of Sunset?" A documentary of the airlifted cash to Iran?

    ReplyDelete
  26. G. Money6:45 AM

Speaking of which, please note that the MGM National Harbor does not have the type of nightclub you are talking about. It's as if the people running these places actually understand how they work and what their clientele is after!

    ReplyDelete
  27. 6:43: Maybe, like Hans Riemer, you're just too low-energy to tackle this nighttime economy thing. He's so low energy, when he gives a fireside chat, the fire goes out.

  28. G. Money6:56 AM

I've been to clubs in Vegas, London, Beijing, DC/Baltimore, SF, etc. I've even DJed at some of them. Tell me again which clubs you've been to?

By the way, Jesse Tittsworth, who opened U St. Music Hall, one of the top-rated clubs in the country, used to do a weekly at South Beach or whatever it was called before it was Parva. Notice that he didn't pick Bethesda as the location for his club. And that was before Hans Riemer was elected.

Lest it be lost in the #facts, let's just note that Dyer is advocating for the council and planning board to mandate that hotels in Bethesda (set to include the headquarters of a Fortune 500 hotel company) include a secondary business of a type that he's apparently NEVER EVEN BEEN TO.

    Solid policy chops there.

Given that the Council has failed in every respect, and is incrementally adopting my policies from previous campaigns (universal Pre-K, automobile solution for Legion Bridge upgrade instead of their pre-2014 "transit-only" solution, shuttles to Metro, etc.), it's clear that I indeed have the solid policy chops currently missing on the County Council.

Fortunately, the voters of Montgomery County disagree with you about your policy chops.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 6:07: No, the voters will totally agree with me. In addition to what I wrote in my 11:33 response regarding policies the Council has copied from me, I also was proven correct about the Little Falls Place development the Council unanimously approved, as well as the code violations in Long Branch. I warned the Council that rezoning for teardowns would result in poor upkeep of buildings. Two years later, 7 of their constituents died as a result of their vote on the Long Branch sector plan. The record proves I have more policy chops than everyone on the Council combined.

Look at the liquor disaster - they were completely impotent. They write letters to the Planning Board that the board just laughs at and tears up. They send legislation to Annapolis, and Mikey Haircut just throws the Riemer bill in the trash. Humiliating.

How come this hasn't happened in Bethesda? Just about every building here is "zoned for teardown".

And didn't the problems at Flower Branch pre-date the re-zoning vote?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  49. 4:17: What lies have I repeated?

9:31: The problems at Flower Branch POST-dated the explosion, as hundreds of additional code violations were found in the first inspection some weeks after the tragedy. The complex had 1000s of code violations in the years following the Council's passage of the Long Branch sector plan.

Bottom line: The landlord had no incentive to maintain the buildings after the Council passed the Long Branch plan, which incentivized tearing down existing apartments for redevelopment. That's on the Council for ignoring my advice and voting for greed. SAD!
