M&T Bank on Norfolk Ave. to close in June
Could Montgomery County's moribund economy be putting a damper on the explosive growth of banks in downtown Bethesda? This morning brings the second bank branch closure announcement in as many weeks. M&T Bank's prominent corner location at 7920 Norfolk Avenue will close on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. If you're a customer here, their closest nearby branch is at 4800 Hampden Lane.

Like in the daytime I got outside the Sun I used to my friend Dana Dad seen before like the halo seal a halo I when I was 19 one of the preaching I had my trial Sam I seen the light on my shadow on the ground at a time then now from ever since then it's like a light coming further down over my body around my my shadow is over by Balarama shouting like cheetah life Old Sport which is your halo MoCo Cartel you know moribund aura and that's why ever I can't see that well if you see you got some to the drugs to retain and now I don't know what for real ones I know what I see what I want to real or not and so that's why that's why you see people different it's gonna get annoying I see like well sometime I come outside I can see when I look at the tree the wind stopped blowing but we know we got oxygen from the plants and we get them carbon dioxide and so it's the wind usually blow sometimes I don't blow all the time like I'm in a house a long time hey Baba Booey bro real strong
Canopy by Hilton is OPEN!
What’s the other bank branch that closed?
I would venture that you have reported far more openings than closings, which would be the opposite of moribund. Unless your reports are wrong?
Hope something more useful and active goes into this corner spot.
Meanwhile Dyer is still not reporting a certain condo several blocks away from this M&T that is in the process of foreclosure.
I haven't used a brick-and-mortar bank in nearly 10 years
There is no "rain tax". You are not being taxed for the rain that falls on your property.
Also it's hypocritical to complain about both a budget deficit and taxes being too high.
What condo is going into foreclosure?
@8:16 AM
How is it hypocritical? Our county has mismanaged resources while jacking up taxes. Both should be areas of concerns for those with a vested interest in the county.
Hans Riemer strikes again! Throw him and his fellow bums off the Corrupt Council this coming June and November.
Now that Robert has declared his candidadcy it seems reasonable (especially in light of the photo used on the comment locked article) to ask the following question:
Robert are you a tax payer? Other than sales and use taxes of course, of which my ten year old would qualify.
When was the last time you filed a 1040 and your income was not simply wiped out by the Std Deduction and exemption (~$10,400)?
My standards of voting for someone differ from how much I respect them as a blogger. I wouldn't, and haven't, asked this of a blogger ever. I will ask it of my political candidates.
Why no comments allowed for the campaign propaganda post?
Mr. Dyer: When will you be releasing your alternative budget proposal? This would go a long ways towards helping voters understand your priorities. How large of a tax cut would you offer? Which programs would you cut to close the funding gap? Please be specific.
And on the topic of taxes: Will you be releasing your tax returns?
On the topic of locked comment sections: If elected to the Council, do you similarly plan on “locking out” your constituents?
12:19 PM / 1:24 PM Council candidates don't release their tax returns and you know it. Your argument that Dyer doesn't pay taxes is ludicrous. We have such a large, motley group of folks running for council this cycle- what is your obsession with Robert Dyer?
Why not the same obsession about Hans Reimer being funded by Bain Capital? You know, the firm Romney managed and is responsible for Toys R Us going under. They really pick winners.
@1:40 (unsigned Dyer?): 1:24 here. Seeing as this is Mr. Dyer’s blog, it seems an appropriate forum for asking about his positions on the issues as a candidate for office.
What is YOUR (and Mr. Dyer’s, for that matter) obsession with Hans Reimer? Curious that you and Mr. Dyer would share such similar talking points about Bain Capital, etc. I’d trust Mitt Romney on the Council more than many others.
2:36 PM Dyer has an email, feel free to send him a note if you have specific questions. It makes no sense to keep spitballing the same topics again and again here in comments.
Will Dyer see you on the campaign trail?
I'm not Dyer and I'm not obsessed with Reimer. Reimer has a habit of overstating his limited accomplishments, so there's nothing wrong with calling that out. He's never answered why he is funded by Bane.
"Your argument that Dyer doesn't pay taxes is ludicrous"
Why is it? It's clear that he has never owned any real property and does not ever seem to have been gainfully employed.
4:14pm you have zero evidence for your claims because you are lying. Stick to facts and reality please. You just look foolish claiming Dyer pays no taxes or has never had revenue.
Nobody cares where Robert lives nor cares about his person information. With all of Robert’s big talk and constant disparaging of others, folks just want to know whether Robert has his own house or lives with his mom. Seems like Robert doesn’t pay property taxes. So who is he to complain about deficits and the like?
5:14pm Reimer has never run a bar, never brewed a batch of beer and is generally very low energy yet he claims to lead the county on nightlife. Who is he to do do? Lol.
5:12pm only in MoCo media is a journalist showing skepticism towards
failed elected officials considered to be "disparaging"
Go along to get along is better, right?
5:48: No kidding - I reported that 2 weeks in advance.
@ 4:52 - Following your many requests, I have read Dyer's "About Me" page on his blog, multiple times, and I have yet to find anything in his "resume" that sounds like actual paid employment.
12:19: So why haven't you asked it of Hans Riemer for the last 8 years?
8:16: There absolutely is a rain tax. It's hypocritical for you to not mention the Council record of irresponsible spending, which along with the flight of the ultra-rich to other counties, moribund economy, costs generated by new housing and illegal immigrant enrollment in MCPS, is squarely responsible for the deficit.
It is not a "rain tax" because the amount of tax will not change based on the amount of rain. There could be a drought, moderate rainfall or a hurricane and the tax would not change in the slightest. Is there anything that you will not twist, distort, misrepresent or blatantly lie about, Dyer?
I'm not 12:19 so I can't speak for him/her, but I would be happy to ask Hans Riemer and other County office candidates to provide recent tax turns, as is typically done for candidates president.
The ball is in your court, Mr. Dyer.
@ 5:19 PM - And Robert Dyer has done none of those things, yet HE claims to be an expert on the nighttime economy.
When he can't debate the issues, "anonymous" makes up lies about Dyer with the usual ad hominem attacks.
5:32pm read it again. I'm sure you're listening to Dyer's music on Spotify in the background of your crawl space while you refresh his about us page for the 100th time.
6:36pm Dyer lives in Bethesda and has covered Bethesda's nighttime economy for awhile. Certainly is more of a subject matter expert than reamer.
6:00: What is the tax on, if not on the rain?
6:04: It's not even required of presidential candidates, and never has been for County Council candidates, none of whom have ever shown us their tax returns. I do look forward to reading their returns when you ask them to release them. LOL
5:14: You know nothing about my financial arrangements, and always end up sounding like a desperate moron when you speculate about them.
5:32: Don't blame me that you are functionally illiterate, and can't read a 2nd grade-reading-level biography.
2:36: Good afternoon, Hans.
10:10: Impermeable area. Why would we want someone representing us on the Council who can’t grasp this very basic concept?
10:15 We know nothing because you refuse to tell us. So we have no choice but to draw our own conclusions. Feel free to correct the record.

Here is the entire text of Robert Dyer's "2nd grade-reading-level biography" on this site's "About Us" page. What is there to suggest that he has ever been gainfully employed?
"Robert Dyer is a lifelong resident of Bethesda, and CEO of Suburban News Network. He began publishing hyperlocal news about his hometown in 2006. A civic activist in Montgomery County for over a decade on issues like transportation, development and education, Robert has also been an advocate for the disabled and victims of domestic violence.
"His journalistic efforts have put a spotlight on the loss of affordable housing, infrastructure and traffic congestion, environmental brownfields, pedestrian safety, government accountability, and other topics of importance to the community.
"Suburban News Network supplies breaking news across Montgomery County through several hyperlocal news sites..."
Seriously, would you vote for someone who won't answer the most basic of questions? Like actual work experience. Like where he gets his money. He's gone off on where others get their money (Riemer) and how they spend their money (like getting a PhD) Why should Dyer be immune from questions?
He's blatantly campaigning on this blog while, not just insulting readers, but showing everyone how he will treat those who offer different ideas or those who disagree with him.
Karma has a surprising way of taking care of situations. All you have to do is to sit back and watch.
9:18am Dyer has his relevant experience on his about us and on his campaign site. He has a good background for public service in the county.
Dyer has his relevant experience on his about us and on his campaign site.
"Got someone else to fix a hole in a wall one time."
10:36AM I was speaking about "here." That's why I posted it "here." He's campaigning "here."
Since you insist on bringing up "there" I took a quick look. Dyer has no relevant business experience, no relevant educational experience, doesn't seem to respect the value of others with differing views, overstates his abilities, and is using unsubstantiated claims and opinion as if it were fact.
How is that a good background for public service?
Now this is how you write a resume for a campaign website:
Hans Riemer serves as an At-Large Member of the Montgomery County Council, where he represents more than 1 million residents in an inclusive, metropolitan community.
Hans has dedicated his career to public service and his dream of creating opportunity for all people to achieve their potential. As a Councilmember, Hans works towards his vision by advocating for public education and public transportation, early childhood programs, libraries, recreation, human services, housing and economic development.
Hans currently serves as Chairman of the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) and one of only two county officials nationally on the FCC Intergovernmental Advisory Committee (IAC). In the Montgomery County Council, Hans serves as the Lead for Digital Government as well as on the Committees for Planning, Housing, and Economic Development (PHED) and Government Operations & Fiscal Policy (GO).
Hans has a passion for progressive change that comes from his roots in Oakland, California, and the commitment to social justice that he learned from his parents, who were active in the community.
His background in public policy and political engagement prepared him well for service as a Montgomery County Councilmember. Hans previously served as:
-Senior Advisor for AARP: Hans worked to help Americans gain access to retirement savings through the “Auto IRA” initiative and he helped organize a community volunteerism program.
-National Youth Vote Director for Barack Obama: Hans helped young voters raise their voices for change by electing Barack Obama in 2008, starting with the landslide turnout of young voters in the Iowa Caucus.
-Political Director for Rock the Vote: Hans guided political programs as Rock the Vote registered nearly a million young voters during the 2004 election. He organized a Democratic presidential candidates debate with CNN and an advocacy campaign promoting the young adult health insurance option, which later became a key provision of Obamacare.
-Social Security campaign director: A nationally recognized leader on Social Security, Hans played a pivotal role organizing the Democratic coalition that stopped President Bush from privatizing Social Security. MoveOn.org’s Tom Matzzie called Hans “one of five people in the country most responsible for protecting Social Security from George Bush.”
-Hans and his wife Angela live in Takoma Park, along with their two sons, Henry and Travis, both MCPS students. They love the community life that is available to residents of Montgomery County.
Hans was born and raised in Oakland, California and graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1995. He was elected to the Council in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.
11:11 AM You're the one making unsubstantiated claims. Dyer has his relevant experience posted. Being a community activist and local news publisher is great background for public service. Dyer put himself forward to serve residents and lists exactly what he wants to do.
12:53 PM Hans has a record, so there will be plenty to discuss during the campaign. (And no, I'm not talking about his arrest record.)
Council President Hans Reamer is all but assured to win re-election, but people do still run against him.
12:53: So glad you brought up Hans Riemer's falsified resume. He claimed in 2010 to have helped Obama win in November 2008 as his Youth Vote Director. In fact, he was terminated in April 2008, long before Obama had even clinched the Democratic nomination. When will the Post report this?
With all of the puffery and pablum in that bio, where are the actual accomplishments? He has none, as the Post editorial board noted when they rescinded their endorsement of him in 2014.
Meanwhile, I have a list of actual accomplishments on my website. Not just vague statements by Tom Matzzie crediting me for stuff I didn't actually do. He has many "initiatives" in his Bain Capital/Danaher/Wall Street-funded "career," but no success with any of them.
1:41: Are you sure? He's at the bottom of a list of more than 30 names, and has no political base in the County.
11:11: I majored in Latin American history and studied urban planning in Latin America, both highly-relevant experience in a diverse and poorly-planned County. I have actual business experience, and have hired, fired, and managed employees, and delivered projects on-time and under-budget. I've been a civic activist countywide for more than a decade, and you can read a partial list of my actual, tangible accomplishments during that time at RobertDyer.net.
“he was terminated in April 2008”
Proof or it didn’t happen.
“The Post editorial board...rescinded their endorsement of [Reimer] in 2014”
Are you referring to the fact that the Post endorsed him in 2010 but declined to do so in 2014? That doesn’t constitute a recission.
In what role did you hire, fire, and manage employees? What projects have you managed? Why is none of this mentioned on any of your biographical information pages?
Robert Dyer: "I have actual business experience, and have hired, fired, and managed employees, and delivered projects on-time and under-budget."
I agree with @ 7:33 PM. If you believe this experience is relevant to your candidacy for County Council, then why don't you mention it explicitly on your campaign website? And why don't you mention the names of the entities for which you worked, here?
Your steady stream of half-answers and non-answers just encourages the "Alinskys" here.
"I studied urban planning in Latin America"
In which countries?
Continuing my question at 8:20 PM, when you say that "I studied urban planning in Latin America", do you mean that you actually traveled to cities in Latin America to study their urban planning? Or that you read about it during your studies in Maryland?
"I've been a civic activist countywide for more than a decade, and you can read a partial list of my actual, tangible accomplishments during that time at RobertDyer.net."
But this is all strictly volunteer activity, right? Just strictly on your own, not as part of any group or organization?
There are 3 other Republicans, 33 democrats and 1 Green Party candidates running for the at-large seats. (24 other males, 13 females.)
Why compare yourself to only Riemer?
Excellent questions from engaged Montgomery County voters at 7:33, 8:12, 8:27, 8:37, and 5:06.
Dyer, you look so foolish. You will lose. Reimer is going to crush you - without the aid of zombies voting for him, as you claim.
