Stonebridge acquires The Jewelry Exchange property in Bethesda
Earlier this month, I learned that the former home of The Jewelry Exchange at 7747 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda had been sold. Now the new owner is known, as well, and it boosts the likelihood of a future redevelopment of the site. Bethesda-based Stonebridge has acquired the property for $3,600,000, according to Maryland real estate records.
The development firm has already delivered two major projects in downtown Bethesda, the Lot 31 mega-redevelopment (The Darcy and The Flats at Bethesda Avenue, along with the gigantic public parking garage beneath the two buildings) and Avocet Tower. It has acquired several other large properties in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, and is a major player in the D.C. market. Currently, the one-story Jewelry Exchange building is on the market for lease. It is a prime property for redevelopment, particularly if Stonebridge can assemble it with one or more of the adjoining properties along St. Elmo Avenue.

Christmas decorations popping up in downtown Bethesda (Photos)
Norfolk Avenue streetery |
The holiday spirit is in evidence at the Norfolk Avenue streetery in downtown Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle, and on the ground level of the new Marriott International office building at 7750 Wisconsin Avenue. Once again, the Merry Bethesda selfie wall is now at the streetery, along with some wreaths - but few diners making use of the outdoor dining space. Over at the Marriott building, presents have been placed beneath Christmas trees in the lobby, along with a wreath.

Dan and Bryan Trees has opened its Christmas tree lot at 4600 Davidson Drive at Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase. Longtime residents will recognize this as a spot long used for Christmas tree sales on Chevy Chase's "green mile" between downtown Bethesda and Friendship Heights. They'll be open Monday-Friday 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM, and 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on weekends, until they sell out. "No other place will have as beautiful & elegant trees," a sign out front boasts.

Massive power outage across Montgomery County
Virtually all of the outages are in the central and eastern part of the county, but residents in several areas of Bethesda report that their lights flashed multiple times, power fluctuations that can damage appliances and devices. Few of the outages are west of I-270, in Rockville and Germantown. Some of the biggest outages are in Derwood, Aspen Hill, Olney and Wheaton. There are currently a couple of smaller outages in Bethesda - one in the Woodmont Triangle area, and another near the D.C.-Maryland border.
The outage follows a Thanksgiving on which power outages also occurred across the D.C. area. Stay tuned for further updates on the cause of the power outages.
Thanksgiving burglars used adjacent roof to burglarize Bethesda condo
Thanksgiving burglars are believed to have used this adjacent retail wing roof to gain access to a second-floor condo unit |
The burglars who broke into a condo at Fairmont Plaza in downtown Bethesda on Thanksgiving used the roof of the property's retail wing to access the second-floor unit, according to a memo distributed to the building's residents last night. After scaling the one-story structure, the burglars removed a bedroom window to gain entry to the condo, and then fled with valuables.
Incredibly, the burglars were able to do all of this during the Thankgiving dinner hour without being noticed by passersby on the two streets below. Building management has made security camera footage available to the police, who are investigating the break-in.

Bethesda construction update: Solaire 7607 Old Georgetown Road apartments (Video + Photos)
Construction has picked up significant steam over the last several weeks at the future site of the Solaire 7607 Old Georgetown Road apartment tower in downtown Bethesda. Floors are rapidly rising on the former La Madeleine property. The building is now about 10 stories above street level, and will reach 22 floors upon delivery in Q4 2023. There was a minor fire at the site on November 18 (see photo immediately below), but work resumed later the same day.

Marriott seeks liquor license for Bethesda HQ cafe
Marriott International has applied for a liquor license for the ground floor cafe at its Bethesda headquarters at 7750 Wisconsin Avenue. A hearing will be held on the request on December 15, 2022 at 11:30 AM. Can booze entice more employees back into the office? Based on what can be seen through the windows on the ground level and office levels above during business hours, there are not that many employees choosing in-person work over working from home so far.
