Bethesda construction update: West Lane Apartments

SJG Properties' West Lane Apartments at 4901 Montgomery Lane in downtown Bethesda is still on-schedule for delivery as promised this spring. That had been in doubt this past fall, but the project appears to have gotten back on track since. A colder-than-average but light-on-snow winter surely helped in that regard.
A seven-story building with 112 units (15% of which will be affordable), it not surprisingly has a walk score of 99, and is within easy walking distance of the Bethesda Metro station. Building features will include a 2-level underground parking garage, a gym, a terrace bar, and the ubiquitous rooftop deck. SK+I is the architecture firm, and Clark Construction is the contractor.

    "A colder-than-average winter"

    We've been through this before.

Meteorological Winter = December 1 through February 28.

December 2017 - Slightly below average.

January 2018 - Average. The cold snaps were balanced out by warm periods.

February 2018 - WAY above average. Earliest 80-degree temperature recorded.

March 2018 was colder than average - coldest since March 2014, meaning that it was colder 4 years ago - but it's not part of Meteorological Winter.

Seems like everyday I get up and Robert Dyer is reporting on another new development!

  3. 7:17: Previously you admitted the correct trends for each month, but then made the error of claiming that a one-month warm trend somehow negated the 3 months of cooling that surrounded it.

Now you've even started to claim that the far-below-average temperatures of January were "balanced out by warm periods." Total BS. We were all here in January, and can easily tell you are lying.

"Meteorological winter" doesn't matter when you are examining the trends of temperatures throughout the year. Science is empirical and objective; you can't just make up your own facts when you realize you are losing the climate argument.

"Previously you admitted the correct trends for each month, but then made the error of claiming that a one-month warm trend somehow negated the 3 months of cooling that surrounded it."

No, it is you who are trying to claim that one month of slightly below average temperatures, followed by another month of average temperatures, followed by a third month with way above average temperatures, somehow equals "3 months of cooling".

"Now you've even started to claim that the far-below-average temperatures of January were 'balanced out by warm periods.' Total BS. We were all here in January, and can easily tell you are lying."

I pointed this out previously. Just because the warmer periods weren't as memorable as the coldest periods doesn't mean that they didn't happen. Do you understand how to calculate a mean? Do you understand what "mean temperature for the month of January 2018" means?

"Meteorological winter" doesn't matter when you are examining the trends of temperatures throughout the year.

But you said "A colder than average winter." You didn't say "colder than average year", which would be even more ridiculously false, since 2017 was the second warmest year on record in Washington DC. Stop trying to change your terminology retroactively.

"Science is empirical and objective; you can't just make up your own facts when you realize you are losing the climate argument."

Keep on babbling, you innumerate, scientifically-illiterate, completely un-self-aware fool.

  6. 9:06: Your problem is that you are trying to convince all of us who lived through the far-below-average temperatures of January that it was equally warm that month. You're also trying to claim that a 1-month trend has more weight than the cold trend of the 3 months around it.

It was indeed a colder than average winter - and a colder than average March, as well. These are simply the facts, which is what science is all about.

Robert, you may want to look up the difference between climate and weather. It's almost as if the area you experience right outside your window is not representative of the Earth's climate as a whole. Crazy concept, I know.

    Let's review:

December 2017 - slightly below average

    January 2018 - average

February 2018 - way above average

An easy way to estimate the 3-month average is to eliminate the "average" month, January 2018, then compare the remaining two months - one slightly below average, the other way above average. So it definitely skews to above average for the 3-month period for meteorological winter, 2017-18.

    See how easy math is?
