Big Greek Cafe closes shortly after opening for "maintenance"

Unusual restaurant closures seem to be the theme of today's breaking news in downtown Bethesda. Only a week after opening, the new Big Greek Cafe on Rugby Avenue has suddenly closed. A sign in the window says they will remain closed until Tuesday, July 3 to perform "maintenance to better improve our guests' experience...We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday."

The cafe will also be open on the July 4 holiday with their weekly $5 Gyro Day, but they will close early at 7:00 PM that night.

The dude at South Street Steaks happens to be Greek. Conspiracy is in the air.

As of 10 AM this morning (Monday), the place was completely dark with no one inside and no obvious sign of any reconstruction. I wonder if the problem is related to the water pipe replacement that was done on Saturday on Del Ray Ave near the intersection with Rugby Ave.

I stopped by Big Greek Cafe on Thursday for lunch. It was busy. The only difficulty I experienced was all of the construction on the street. I wouldn't be surprised if the closing had something to do with a water pipe or electrical problem related to the work in the area.

  8. Water issues have plagued the entire block for a few weeks off and on. Partially new construction hookups and partially issues resulting from same.
