Shanghai Village, one of the longest-operating restaurants still in business in downtown Bethesda, has closed at 4929 Bethesda Avenue. The Chinese restaurant has been in business for 37 years. Unlike some of the recent closures in downtown Bethesda that were caused by the closure of the nearby Regal Cinemas, and the County Council's wrecking of the "nighttime economy," the owner here says he is retiring and that "it has been a pleasure" to serve his customers for four decades in Bethesda.
Make like the ice princess and let it go, bloggerman. Nobody but you misses that raunchy theater.

ReplyDeleteCinema closing is cause of all other businesses to fail everyone knows that. This guy was a hard ass worker. Best Peking Duck around carved tableside.

ReplyDeleteIt's a long walk from the site of that theater to Shanghai Village - over half a mile. Stop trying to hammer that square peg into that round hole.
ReplyDeleteFolks new to the area should have done a walking tour of downtown Bethesda when the theater was open. The masses of people there every weekend, the restaurants bustling with patrons, etc.

@ 7:27 AM - I was in Bethesda Row Saturday night. Very crowded. Terrain was packed. Half an hour wait to be seated at Uncle Julio's. Even American Tap Room, which was just one day away from closure for re-branding, was full.

I looked for Glassdoor ratings for Robert Dyer and I couldn't find any entries.
ReplyDeleteAnd Dyer deleted the list of "nightspot" closings, which clearly shows that the vast majority were replaced by other "nightspots".

ReplyDelete@07:24 am - Actually, the walking distance is less than a third of a mile between 4929 Bethesda Avenue and the [once] entrance to the movie theater at 7235 Woodmont.
ReplyDeleteMy family and I have been loyal patrons since he opened up the street, at 4820 Bethesda Avenue, back in 1981. His brother shafted him royally, and Mr. Chung wound up moving to this current location, which never captured the vibrant feel of the former location. The Peking Duck was unmatched, though.
