The depressing final days of Sears in Bethesda (Photos)

The Bethesda Sears store is closing next month, and many departments are now sporting bare shelves and empty floor space. A toy area set up for holiday shoppers has been picked clean, with only rubbish left behind.

There are a few bright spots. Plenty of Craftsman tools remain, and buying a floor model appliance could save you up to 70% off the purchase price. A throwback Christmas animal sporting an early Sears, Roebuck & Co. logo is a reminder of a department store icon having been frittered away by "Fast" Eddie Lampert.

    BREAKING NEWS: The county’s homicide total plunged 10% last year. Thank you, President Reimer!!

    Just for context, the yearly number of homicides in the county since 2007 are as follows:

    2007 = 19
    2008 = 21
    2009 = 12
    2010 = 17
    2011 = 16
    2012 = 15
    2013 = 8
    2014 = 19
    2015 = 30
    2016 = 16
    2017 = 21
    2018 = 19

  2. 5:10: Not only is your comment completely off-topic, but you are wrong. We tied last year's total at 21 - a 31% increase over 2016. You left out the latest victim in Rockville, and the body that was found a few weeks ago.

    No thanks, soft-on-crime President Riemer!

    Rape up 53%, violent gang crimes up 72% (source: MCPD memo to County Council).

  3. But is it completely off-topic?
    You yourself indicated the Sears was killed off by "'Fast' Eddie Lampert".

    Well, that's admirable restraint on your part, for not once again trying to blame this closure on "the MoCo Cartel".

    Unlike your report on the closing of f.y.e. at Wheaton Plaza.

    Daytime photos. A first. I was there yesterday. Beyond depressing. The new addition looks pretty awesome but I wish Craftsman tools did a deal with HD rather than Lowe's.

    "Daytime photos"

    Not necessarily - it could have been taken anytime before 9:00 PM.

    But during business hours - I'm impressed. Maybe Dyer is turning over a new leaf?

    I’m pretty sure the nationwide closure of almost all Sears stores is primarily caused by the the fact that MoCo did not legally require an urban cinema at the Apex site.
