Sears has been closed for several months at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. But workers have now begun removing the iconic sign from the department store's facade.

Too cheap to even remove and replace the sign and paint the whole wall. Glad they died.i won’t miss those sticky asbestos tile floors either.

The building is going to be demolished soon. Why waste time & Money on painting over it?

This is a good time to remind everyone to check out Robert's post on the final hours of Sears in Bethesda. Includes the emotional final loudspeaker sign off by Sears employees.

They're gone. No one cares. I only bought two items there in the past 25 years.

So they only tear down one letter per day? Did the mall hire union workers for the job?

My point was that Sears was too cheap to pay a painter to properly paint the wall, by temporarily removing the sign, painting the whole wall, and replacing the sign. Just like they were too cheap to replace their vinyl floor tile or yellowed lay-in ceiling tile.

Sears died because it did very little to stay up with the competition. Yeah, we can survive by selling Craftsman tools with the promise of free life-time replacement. I guess it turns out that they meant Sears lifetime, not your lifetime...
