Walgreens opens in Bethesda

The first Walgreens in Bethesda opened yesterday at the Bradley Shopping Center in downtown Bethesda. Interestingly, the timing was coordinated with the closure of the Walgreens-owned Rite Aid at the Westwood Shopping Center Friday evening. Rite Aid pharmacy customers are apparently assumed to now take their prescriptions to this Walgreens, where the pharmacy counter is the main focus of the small space.
Last Thursday I noticed the shelves had been stocked. An Apple Store-style security barrier was also installed inside the front entrance. It not only prevents smash and grab burglars from gaining access to the store, but also blurs out all detail on product packaging that can be seen through the front windows.
Now that the store is opened, we can finally see what products will be stocked in the tiny store, which is a new neighborhood store format Walgreens is rolling out nationwide this year. Surprisingly, they do carry some food, raising hopes that this store might stock new Walgreens-exclusive Pringles flavors in the future.
Besides snacks, there is a decent inventory of over the counter medications, toiletries, medical supplies, etc. You're likely to find whatever basic drug store items you need here, without having to play Frogger to cross the street to CVS. However, the store shares the rural town hours of the other businesses in the Bradley Shopping Center, where things wind down by 8:00 PM most nights, so don't cut up your CVS bonus card just yet.

What is an Apple Store-style security barrier?

  2. 8:04: You've never seen the barrier lowered across the inside of the storefront at the Apple Store? It's nothing more than that - a high-tech wall.

@ 8:12 AM I'm not a pre dawn or post midnight mall rat, I'm at the mall when stores are open so no haven't seen it. Looking closer at your photo, appears to be roll down security door. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Apple's version at Montgomery Mall is not an exclusive Apple style.

  4. 8:22: Carpetbagger alert: I'm talking about the Bethesda Row Apple Store, which is in no way a regular roll down door. There is no picture of the security wall on this article because these photos were taken inside the store during business hours, not "post midnight," old sport.

I've lived in Bethesda all my life and I go to the Apple Store once or twice a year. But I've never walked by when it's closed.. so I've never seen this security barrier before.

Is it just a roll-down metal fence like you see at most stores in a shopping mall?

How come the credit card and social media information is given only in Spanish?

"where the pharmacy counter is the main focus of the small space."

...because it's a Walgreens Pharmacy. It's not a Walgreens, as your title claims.

Better than CVS across street. It has parking!

How many Bethesdians are actually "hop[ing] that this store might stock new Walgreens-exclusive Pringles flavors in the future"?

    Robert Dyer, Thanksgiving 2018:

"I went to Clyde's of Chevy Chase. Yes, I would recommend it. Don't tell David Moon I had Old Bay on my Cream of Crab Soup appetizer."

Why would the State Delegate from District 20 care if you "had Old Bay on your Cream of Crab Soup appetizer"?

There was some silly battle between some elected officials over Old Bay. It was done as a joke, only Robert is delusional and thinks he matters to everyone.

  12. 3:37: I do matter - Moon himself has referred to me on social media in the past. You don't talk about people who don't matter. You've spent your entire Sunday posting troll comments on my website. Sad!

  13. 12:13: Wrong! It says Walgreens right over the storefront, Einstein.

If this pharmacy staff is the same that was in the Westwood Shopping Center pharmacy then I will be delighted! They are the most friendly and efficient staff I have known. The CVS is a nightmare compared to this place. I hope folks will give it a try.

Have you heard anything about a Discount DrugMart coming to Bethesda? I do not like Walgreens, they start off nice, but within weeks they always leave items all over their floor which poses a safety hazard and is unsightly.

Real shame they couldn't go in where Bradley Care Drugs was.

Wow... They didn't even re-tile the floor?
