Amazon has never publicly announced it is opening an Amazon Fresh grocery store at the Collection at Chevy Chase this year...until now. Due to leaks, the identity of the new store was one of the worst-kept secrets in the D.C. area. But Amazon remained mum about its plans until yesterday, when it posted positions for the "Chevy Chase Village" location on its job site.
Amazon may be confused about the geography of Chevy Chase, but it has at least ended whatever tiny amount of speculation there was left about the identity of the grocery store replacing the Giant at the Collection in Friendship Heights. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union calls the expansion of Amazon grocery stores part of a "ruthless strategy to take over America's $800 billion grocery industry."
A second Amazon Fresh store is in the works for the 270 Center on Shady Grove Road on the Rockville/Gaithersburg border. There's been no question about that one since I exclusively broke the story last year.
Actually "Chevy Chase Village" is not inaccurate. The town starts right at the property line of the shopping center, just 200 feet north of the building.

ReplyDeleteI don't know what the Amazon Fresh model is, but I wonder if it will offer all the household goods the Giant offered? Talking about paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc. You can get these at CVS but that's another stop on your shopping. I also wonder how they will handle parking charges.
ReplyDelete9:49 AM Amazon should offer those basics. They have their own paper towel brand, for example.

Furthermore, wouldn't it be great to get a smaller Amazon Fresh at the vacant Old Georgetown Bethesda Place Safeway?
I like Harris Teeter but the in-store checkout has been a mess for years. Always long lines, even worse for self checkout.
I am personally rather disappointed that the two grocery stores in the immediate neighborhood are both Amazon-owned. I'd rather have some choice on that front. Rodman's is a hell of a walk if you are carrying a lot of items, and Giant's about two miles, I believe, from all the apartments/condos right near this shopping center. There's the little shuttle bus, but on foot, the best options are now owned by the same company. It is what it is.
