The Montgomery County Council unanimously passed a gun control bill yesterday that will prevent lawful gun owners with concealed carry permits to carry their firearms within a massive swath of the jurisdiction. Because the bill designates so many types of common buildings and spaces as gun-free zones, and includes the area around them up to 100 yards, it renders the recently-affirmed right to carry a gun outside the home nearly impossible to exercise. Councilmembers may find themselves on the stand in a courtroom within the next year as a result. County taxpayers will pick up the tab to defend any legal challenge to the new law.
The bill also adjusted language in the County's recent law on privately-manufactured firearms to match the new state restrictions on them. Despite Maryland having passed some of the most-restrictive gun laws in the nation in the previous decade, and the Council having passed a PMP bill last year, the Council acknowledged in a press release that the County is nevertheless still experiencing "an epidemic of gun violence."
"I continue to believe that guns create immeasurably more problems, often with tragic outcomes, than they attempt to solve,” Council President Gabe Albornoz (D -At-Large) said in a statement. “This legislation will help to ensure that we do everything possible to minimize the number of guns in our public space." Albornoz led the effort to pass the PMP bill in 2021.
"[T]his will go into effect very rapidly, and we’ll be moving in court, equally rapidly,” Mark Pennak, President of gun rights organization Maryland Shall Issue told DC News Now following the Council vote.
If only there would be some personal sacrifice shared by the council for essentially setting several million taxpayer dollars on fire.
ReplyDeleteSee you in Court.
ReplyDeleteWhat a virtue signaling clownshow this is. The compulsion of these grifters on the County Council to assign blame for crimes to legal carriers who don't commit crimes with their legal guns and their inability to assign blame for crimes to illegal carriers for the crimes they commit with illegal guns is really something to behold. It's gaslighting of the highest order. These Council clowns have to speak with lumped platitudes like "minimize guns" because they're selling a lie. They can't actually say "minimize ILLEGAL guns" because it would give away the grift that this isn't about gun crime prevention at all. No criminal who carries a gun illegally is going to abide by this law, and this Council couldn't give a hoot about that. All that matters to this Council is that they wanted to find a way to get legally carried guns of the street, leaving those folks defenseless to armed individuals who won't follow this law they're so proud of.
ReplyDeleteThe Bolsheviks at work again. Along with a B-controlled press and judiciary, they implement their ideology with such arrogance and contempt for the average citizen. Their freakish constituency here in MC insures their continued stay in power. I hate them. I do hate them.
ReplyDeleteAnd the council hates "the little people", even the drones that reliably vote for them. Liberals these days have evolved from marching for the 1st Amendment to the totalitarian rule makers we have today.
ReplyDelete@5:09
ReplyDeleteSeems like you are losing it. I don't understand why you don't move somewhere else if you hate them. The current regime is not going anywhere anytime soon.
@5:05 you're welcome to move to a different county anytime. Your anachronistic terminology combined with your vitriol of the county suggests you've been living here a while. Why not take any opportunity to move? Is it because the benefits of living in MoCo outweigh the risks?
ReplyDelete@6:54 AM: Oh ok. 5:09 PM should move so that he/she stops complaining. It's easier to have the One-Party Democrat Rule without any vocal dissent. You properly called it a regime though.
ReplyDelete@7:33 AM: There's goes another person telling 5:09 PM to move out of MoCo. It's just easier for your One-Party Democrat Rule if you don't have to hear a dissenting voice isn't it? You've become the very authoritarians you claim to fear.
ReplyDeleteTo 6:54 AM
ReplyDeleteI'm not losing it. Did kind of sound that way, though, didn't it? And I don't really hate them... I just don't like them. They're trampling on my rights with total impunity, and at my expense, to add insult to injury. When was the last time they did anything at all that was in the best interest of the average Bethesda citizen?
If they really wanted to make me feel a fraction better about them, they'd outlaw gas leafblowers tomorrow, but they're too busy with their Bolshevik agenda to do anything like that.
I've lived here long enough to remember when the schools actually taught all the subjects without the idealogy, when there were three or four murders a year, and when the theft of a bicycle made the pages of the Gazette. When you could leave your door unlocked, and when the cops rode around in pairs Adam-12 style. Is what we have today an improvement?
The problem with 6:54 & 7:33 is that people can't keep running from democrats and their failures in policy.
ReplyDeleteCalifornia is a perfect example of liberal rule essentially wiping out the middle-class creating an exodus from the state to Texas & Florida. Unfortunately, liberals having zero self-awareness, vote for the very same policies that ruined the places they came from. Much like locusts which consume everything within their grasp and then move on having left devastation in their wake.
@ 7:33 AM -
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the mentality of these people at all.
Why do they suddenly expect Montgomery County residents to suddenly cast more than a pathetic tiny trickle of votes for Republican candidates?
2022 - Sullivan (R) 25.1%
2018 - Ficker (R) 16.4%
2014 - Shalleck (R) 34.2%
2010 - Rosenfeld (R) 34.2%
2006 - Floyd (R) 23.1%
2002 - Anderson (R) 37.0%
@11:48 AM: Because they figure at some point that reasonable people will be fed up enough with MoCo's high crime, illegal immigration sanctuary policies, overcrowded schools, high taxes and poor road conditions under its One-Party Democrat Leadership. However, the people of MoCo have decided that they're fine with all of this.
ReplyDeleteI threatened to move out of MoCo many times and, as I sit here in balmy South Florida, I am so glad I did. Best move I ever made. Folks are a lot friendlier down here too.
ReplyDelete". Liberals these days have evolved from marching for the 1st Amendment to the totalitarian rule makers we have today."
ReplyDeleteYessir - they have become the Fascists they once despised. Ironic, isn't it?
@ 7:54AM
ReplyDeleteI was not telling 5:09 to move...wondering why they had not.
I used to live in Idaho, which is the starker opposite to MoCo electoral results. I recall times when the Democrats rarely got out of the high single-digit share of the vote.
So, did I sit around screaming about it? No, I moved. I guess not the answer folks want to hear, but what else can you really do? @4:56pm seems to have figured it out.
Also, I don't understand the schools argument. According to USNews, Walt Whitman is the #1 public HS in all of MD. Wooten is #2...Poolesville #4...Churchill #5...BCC #8....Richard Montgomery #9. So, 6 of the top 10 public HSs in all of Maryland are in MoCo. Seems like the high taxes produce some results.
Just as they start stealing your cars, carjacking and armed assaults and home invading your space
ReplyDeleteThe democrats ban your guns
They really hate us
You know who banned the law abiding citizens from owning guns
ReplyDeleteHitler, Stalin and Fidel Castro
6:11 more likely got ran out of Idaho when advocating for higher taxes, not for themselves but for everyone else as all liberals do.
ReplyDeleteBetter check how the per-pupil spending is done across the county as the largest amounts get distributed to the poorest performing clusters yet there is very little change in results. Democrats love throwing money at problems and doubling down when the results don't come in never really addressing the core issues. DC spends over 22K per-pupil per-year, (figures are 5+ years old), yet poor performance doesn't change how they spend the money and the results are abysmal.
The point that 6:11 misses is that in-tact family units give the highest chance of success in school and life in general not to mention higher income households tend to have children that have a parent home to support them during the day.
ReplyDeleteOf course the liberal implies that it's the high taxes that produce results which is not only sad but simplistic.
@ 2:42
ReplyDeleteJust making the obvious point that MoCo has 6 of the top top 10 high schools in the state which is definitely a draw for all political stripes.
I guess then you are saying that liberals in MoCo have great family values and high incomes...suppose that is another draw.
I don't see many folks deciding to move to Cumberland or some of these other depressed, bright red areas of Maryland. Somehow you will blame the liberals for all their ills as well. Always the victims.
The problem with liberals is that they think more money without commensurate results is acceptable. They're more than happy to send money to poorer areas as long as they don't need to see them and they stay in their lane. Why else would democrats fight against things like charter schools which actually produce results? Because political power is the most important thing to a democrat.
ReplyDeleteFunny that liberals in Bethesda pop champagne corks to celebrate how well it's going here all due to their ideology. Tell that story to those living in any liberal run city like Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago etal.
